Saab is continuing its efforts to boost sales The number of Saab cars sold in the last three months of 2010 was more than double a year earlier, the carmaker’s Dutch owner Spyker has said.
A total of 11,448 Saab cars were sold worldwide between October and December, up 129% from the same period in 2009, and 31% higher than July-September.
For 2010 as a whole, 31,696 Saab cars were sold globally.

Jinoos Sharif Razi, lawyer to Iranian-Dutch citizen, Zahra Bahrami, who was arrested during the Ashura Day Protests in 2009 (27 December 2009), talked to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran about her client’s recent death sentence.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali moet oppassen.
Gulet Mohamed is an 18-year-old American citizen whose family is Somalian. His parents moved with him to the U.S. when he was 2 or 3 years old, and he has lived in the U.S. ever since. In March, 2009, he went to study Arabic and Islam in Yemen (in Sana’a, the nation’s capital), and, after several weeks, left (at his mother’s urging) and went to visit his mother’s family in Somalia, staying with his uncle there for several months. Roughly one year ago, he left Somalia and traveled to Kuwait to stay with other family members who live there. Like many teenagers who reach early adulthood, he was motivated in his travels by a desire to see the world, to study, and to get to know his family’s ancestral homeland and his faraway relatives.

Dutch student developed writing pen designed to reduce stress
The MedGuru - Miguel Bruns Alonso, an Industrial Design PhD student from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has created an innovative handheld device which he claims is a discreet and effective solution for preventing stress, anywhere, anytime.
Bruns has conceived a pen that can not only spot short-term stress in the person using it, but also has the potential to lower some of the anxieties he is feeling.
It is a well known fact that people are prone to playing with their pens when they are tense. Using this mechanism, Bruns developed a pen that can detect nervous actions indicating stress when it is being fidgeted with. [read on] (more…)
Goed nieuws.
Muslims in Holland offer to guard Coptic churches
AhramOnline, Egypt - Dutch Muslims on Tuesday offered to guard three Coptic churches in the Netherlands which have been threatened on an Al-Qaeda-linked website after a New Year’s Day bombing killed 21 Coptic Christians in Egypt.
The Dutch Muslim Council, the Council of Moroccan Mosques in the Netherlands and the Federation of Islamic Organisations “offer protection” to three Dutch Coptic churches which were among 50 in Egypt and Europe threatened on a list on an Al-Qaeda-linked website, they said in a statement. If the Dutch government carries out its intention of closing down all coffee shops located within 350 meters of a school, six out of ten of these cannabis selling establishments will have to go. That according to a survey by newspaper NRC Handelsblad, a newspaper well known in the Netherlands for it’s relentless investigative journalism.
The newspaper used a walking distance of 350 metres as the basis for its calculations. However, if the cabinet were to use a straight line as the basis for its calculations, the number of coffee shops facing closure would even be higher. In Amsterdam alone 187 of the current 223 coffee shops would have to close.
“Men and women wept, and reached out to shake the hands of the marines, or simply touch their uniforms. “Thank you, mister!”", schreef een Amerikaanse journalist.
Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, allemaal mislukkingen. En om Irak een succes te noemen?
GG - In this week’s New Yorker, Peter Maass — who was in Iraq covering the war at the time — examines the iconic, manufactured toppling of the Saddam statue in Baghdad’s Firdos Square, an event the American media relentlessly exploited in April, 2003, to propagandize citizens into believing that Iraqis were gleeful over the U.S. invasion and that the war was a smashing success. Acknowledging that the episode demonstrated that American troops had taken over the center of Baghdad, Maas nonetheless explains that “everything else the toppling was said to represent during repeated replays on television — victory for America, the end of the war, joy throughout Iraq — was a disservice to the truth.” [read on] (more…)
Aha, Islam, the religion of peace.
Verbazend.
Green diets for daughters, bananas and potatoes for sons?
The Dutch study asked 32 women who already had boys to try a special “little girl diet” high in calcium and magnesium.
This meant eating foods like goat’s cheese salad, vegetable stew and rice pudding. Foods like potatoes and bananas, which have high levels of potassium, that is believed to lead to boys, were restricted.
The result of the five-year project was that 26 women had girls and only six gave birth to boys. [read on] (more…)
We zullen zien.
(more…)
Gurgaon, The Times of India - Butlers have always been a status symbol throughout the Elizabethan and Victorian eras till the early 90s, when butlery travelled to America from Europe. A butler is the most superior of all servants, as he controls everything from packing the masters bags, to suggesting the wine for dinner. An ambitious city like Gurgaon has been craving for personalised hospitality for long, and now we have the first batch of trained butlers ready to serve the elite.
Ton De Wit, a butler of international repute who serves the Dutch Royal family, is in Gurgaon to train young hospitality crew on the sophisticated art of butlering. Ton has been a butler for over 30 years and has served popular personalities across the globe like Bill Clinton (while he was the president), the King of Japan, Queen Elizabeth and Helmut Schmidt (Chancellor of West Germany from 1974-82). There are openly gay people in the Republican Party. Yes, there are. For example Christopher Barron the chairman of GOProud. Though he states that he is not a Republican but a conservative Republican.
Cenk Uygur, here on MSNBC, tries to get hm to explain why he is a Republican.
Why be in that party that hates you. Why not for example be a conservative Democrat? This being an America politician, the answer you get to that question is: zero on substance, max on bullshit.
UYGUR: All right. President Obama has said many times if you want to go forward, you put it in “D.” If you want to go backwards, you put it in “R.” Get it?
All right. Now, the president and the Democrats made history last week. They repealed “Don`t Ask, Don`t Tell,” and that is a huge step forward for gay rights.
But, as always, the “Grand Old Party” is stuck in the stone age. Two major conservative groups, Concerned Women for America and the Family Research Council, are boycotting the conservative political action conference this year. They`re out — they`re sitting it out because GOProud, a national organization of gay conservatives, was invited to the event.
For more on this, let`s turn to the chairman of the board of GOProud, Christopher Barron.
All right, Chris. First, let me get it out of the way. Why on God`s green earth are you even a Republican?

Glenn Greenwald criticized the refusal of the magazine Wired (current and future trends in technology, entertainment, communications) to release or comment on the Manning chat logs which they have in their possesion. Now Wired hits back. They attack Greenwald on all kind of issues but, as is often the case, they hardly respond to the only criticism that matters: their refusal to release or even comment on what is the central evidence in the arrest of Bradley Manning, who stole secret diplomatic U.S. cables and gave them to WikiLeaks.
Here part of the respons of Greenwald. I have to say it is always a happy moment for me to see how Glenn Greenwald deals with his critics.
Last night, Wired posted a two-part response to my criticisms of its conduct in reporting on the arrest of PFC Bradley Manning and the key role played in that arrest by Adrian Lamo. I wrote about this topic twice — first back in June and then again on Monday. The first part of Wired’s response was from Wired.com Editor-in-Chief Evan Hansen, and the second is from its Senior Editor Kevin Poulsen. Both predictably hurl all sorts of invective at me as a means of distracting attention from the central issue, the only issue that matters: their refusal to release or even comment on what is the central evidence in what is easily one of the most consequential political stories of this year, at least.

Or are you planning to debate someone who strongly believes in something not accepted by regular science or common sense, than print out this diagram and hand it over to the person to be signed before you start arguing!

Quite a few Americans, though not enough, are aware of the fact that the majority ofthe media in the United States are spreading a lot of biased information and some clearcut lies. Take for example William Greider, national affairs correspondent for The Nation.
GREIDER: Reporters and editors are disturbed to learn that growing sectors of the public do not trust their reporting. But this is the natural result of one-sided reporting. It reflects the unconscious class bias of the media—looking up to selected expertise that’s in power and looking down on the everyday citizens…lots of citizens are finding their own ways to inform themselves, putting their faith in the bloggers or other renegade sources. Who can blame them?
Zie ook hier op drasties: Turning Dutch part-time culture from a weakness into a strength.
The New York Times ran a fascinating piece this week about professional part-time work in the Netherlands. It seems the Dutch have had more success than most of us in finding ways to balance work and family life. Most interesting to me is that their workplace flexibility movement isn’t just focused on women:

Dutch football players are hot. They are doing very well for their employers worldwide like Tottenham,Bayern and Inter. All players who have been discarded by Real Madrid the summer prior.
Why, asks Leander Schaerlaeckens, in his blog on ESPN, why are they doing so well. He thinks is arrogance. Mind you, he is Dutch himself.
Tottenham attacking midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has had a huge hand in Spurs’ success, with eight goals in 13 league games so far this season.
Last year, winger Arjen Robben scored 20 goals for Bayern Munich across the Bundesliga and Champions League. At the same time, playmaker Wesley Sneijder was the crucial cog in Inter Milan’s victory march to the Treble, winning the Champions League, the Italian league and the Italian Cup.
What did these three players have in common besides being Dutch?

Waarom is Glenn Beck zo populair?
The cost of becoming Dutch is set to go up from €567 to €789 from January 1, the home affairs ministry said. The naturalisation of children aged under 18 will go up from €85 to €116 and the residency permit for asylum seekers will increase in price from €50 to €202. Home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner said in a memo to MPs it is reasonable to put up the cost of becoming Dutch because of the advantages it brings with it.

Here is the list of what Americans consider the ten best viral videos of 2010. Well, what Mary Elizabeth Williams of Salon considers the best viseo’s of 2010. Number 10, 8, 5, 3 and 2 have been seen on drasties.
Not this one though, number one viral video in 2010. It’s about the ugly homophobic bullying in the United States and the outbreak of teen suicides. It did put the spotlight on the abuse and harassment too many gay and lesbian kids live with daily.
Columnist and author Dan Savage started the “It Gets Better” project. Savage launched it with his own testimony, and that of his husband, Terry, about overcoming their own difficult teen years to get to the place of being “ecstatic to be alive.” Is was followed by a deluge of responses from regular folks and celebrities, from Perez to the president. The result has been a moving testament to the best side of the Net’s nature, and the power of community to stand up for love and tolerance in the face of hate. And bullies? As a clever satire warns — it will not get better for you.

What being a Christian in the United States of America means, on Fox News, was made perfectly clear by Tucker Carlson, who was filling in for Sean Hannity. He said that NFL quarterback Michael Vick - [a black quarterback (JdeW)] - should have been executed for killing dogs in dog fights. He reacted to praise by President Obama for the American Footballteam Philidelphia Eagles for giving Vick, who served time in prison, a second change.
Of course no one should be surprised by Carlson remarks, since earlier he asked for the summary execution of Sarah Palin for killing defenseless caribous on her TLC reality show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska. Apparently MSNBC host Cenk Uygur missed that last remark.
Crooks and Liars - “Now, I’m a Christian,” Carlson announced, while filling in for Fox News’ Republican commentator Sean Hannity. “I’ve made mistakes myself. I believe fervently in second chances but Michael Vick killed dogs and he did it in a heartless and cruel way and I think, personally, he should have been executed for that.”
Carlson had become outraged because President Barack Obama praised Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie for giving Vick a second chance. [read on] (more…)
The murder rate in the Netherlands has gone down again in 2010. The number of killings for this year stands currently 170. In 2009 a total of 178 people got killed in the Netherlands. So the downward trend of the last few years is still there but might be coming to an end.
Comparing the murder rate in the Netherlands with the U.S.A., we see the same downward trend in America as in Holland. Just on a much higher level. More people get killed in every big city in the U.S. than in the whole of the Netherlands.
Still, the long-term trend is striking in the nation’s three largest cities —New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Homicides in New York have dropped 79% during the past two decades — from 2,245 in 1990 to 471 in 2009, the last full year measured. Chicago is down 46% during that period, from 850 to 458. Los Angeles is down 68%, from 983 to 312.
