What or where is the common link between Bulgarian and Dutch culture?

Novinite.com - professor Bagrelia Borisov: Actually, there are great differences between these cultures. The Netherlands is a relatively small country, but with a glorious past as one of the great colonial powers. It has ruled territories in the Americas, Africa and Asia and this has influenced the mindset of its people. There are many typically Dutch characteristics that distinguish them from us more than they bring us closer.
The entire Dutch history is marked by their struggle against the sea, and the conquest of land. This makes the Dutch appreciative of their land, and particularly seriously concerned about environmental protection and about the lack of pollution of nature and cities. Dutch people are very well organized in everything they undertake. They are characterized by accuracy and compliance with the rules and laws.
Dutch sagacity is also a well known personal trait; it stems from their acumen for commerce - for centuries they dominated European trade and the imports from other continents. Very distinct is the Dutch cuisine, which lacks considerably in variation, taste and creativity as compared with the French and Italian. Very different, of course, is the Dutch landscape - from the name of the country, the Netherlands shows that it is a low land, as flat as a platter.
The history of our peoples is very different to be able to easily find similarities.
As to Belgium, then there the proximity is more tangible. This can be explained by our similar historical destiny. Despite their common spoken language, and the fact that through most of history they have been one country, the Dutch and the Belgians today have a very different mentality.

Nederlanders in het buitenland blijken veel eerder te overlijden dan Nederlanders die gewoon thuis zijn gebleven. Met name zonnesteek is een grote boosdoener. En de stijve Nederlanders in België blijken de Bourgondische levenswijze lichamelijk niet lang vol te houden.
Nee, serieus, expats sterven gemiddeld twintig (20) jaar eerder dan mensen in Nederland. Belangrijkste doodsoorzaken zijn hart- en vaatziekten, ongelukken, kanker, infecties en psychische problemen. Waarbij ongelukken, infecties en psychische problemen veel vaker voorkomen dan in Nederland. Let wel. Het betreft hier vooral landen waar mensen niet voor de lol zitten: het Midden Oosten en Afrikaanse landen.
Volgens een onderzoek van gezondheidswetenschapper Arina Groenheide is het risico op overlijden in België het kleinst (0,028 sterfgeval per 100.000) en in Kenia het grootst (12,18 op de 100.000). Groenheide vond dat Nederlanders bijna 20 keer zoveel kans hebben om dood te gaan in Oost-Mediterrane gebieden, in landen als Marokko, Egypte, Afghanistan en Jordanië - als in Europa. “In Afrika is de sterfkans ruim 16 keer zo groot, met infecties als een van de belangrijkste oorzaken. In Zuidoost-Azië loopt men 9 keer meer kans om te overlijden. Infecties zijn ook in dat gebied een belangrijke doodsoorzaak voor landgenoten.”

Life expectancy of Dutch people abroad is twenty years lower

Dutch travellers and expats have a greater chance of dying younger than people who stay in the Netherlands. Middle Eastern and African countries in particular are high-risk regions. Maar is het echt zo erg gesteld met België, dat land met een ‘tekort aan ruimte, zonlicht en nationale identiteit’?

Hoera! Wij Europeanen hebben nu ook een president en die is vanochtend begonnen aan zijn eerste werkdag. Vannacht trad het Verdrag van Lissabon in werking. De 27 EU-landen kozen Herman van Rompuy tot president voor een periode van tweeëneenhalf jaar.
Hard werken? We zullen zien. Eén (ambtenaar) moet de eerste zijn.

Gaarne wijst JdeW op dit artikel op drasties - ‘Kweenie vrouw’: de strijd tussen U en Wouter Bos - van ruim een jaar geleden, 17 oktober 2008. Dat naar aanleiding van dit bericht: Belgian baron and developer starting construction of Dubai’s The World, an archipelago of 300 islands.
JdeW: [Het is opmerkelijk] dat er mensen zijn die doen alsof er niets is gebeurd. Zoals de Belgische baron Jean van Gysel de Meise die in onderstaand stuk vol trots aankondigt als eerste te beginnen met de bouw van luxueuze villa’s en hotelsuites op nieuwe eilandjes voor de kust van Dubai. Er zijn blijkbaar mensen die denken dat alles gewoon zal blijven zoals het is. Nou, neemt u aan dat is niet zo. Het wordt anders.
Economie is niets anders dan de resultante van gedrag van mensen. Omdat mensen armer zijn geworden, gaat het gedrag van mensen veranderen. Ze zullen minder gaan uitgeven, winkels zullen minder verkopen, bedrijven zullen minder produceren en de overgebleven banken zullen minder geld uitlenen. Dat gaat banen kosten, en echt niet alleen maar van BankGiers. Minder werk, dus nog eens minder geld…
En voor een noemenswaardige opleving van de bedrijvigheid is het wachten op een impuls van nieuwe technologie. De laatste decennia hebben we daarmee veel mazzel gehad. Eerst was er de komst van de chip en de computer, daarna kwam communicatie-technologie: telefonie, internet. De technologie die in de toekomst die economische impuls kan geven is energie-technologie. De omschakeling van olie naar andere energie, andere motoren, andere auto’s enz. kan een enorme stimulans geven. Maar het duurt wel even voordat het zover is. Daar zal ook Baron Jean van Gysel de Meise nog achter komen.

Zie hier de Republikeinse strateeg Mary Matalin, wereldberoemd in Amerika, mede omdat ze getrouwd is met de Democratische strateeg (pitbull) James Carville. Lees dit pro-Palin stukje eens over hoe het toegaat in verkiezingscampagnes: ”I once witnessed an experienced (big) man slap a professional female colleague across the face over an ad buy… and no one thought anything of it.”
Dus zo is H. van Rompie president van de EU geworden? Klappen uitdelen! Serieus, ziet u onze Jan Peter zoiets doen? Sarkozy?… tjaa daar zegt u wat.

Mary Matalin actually pointing to an instance of physical assault of a female employee by a male superior as “the way it is in a campaign-get over it” puts everything that’s wrong with her argument in high relief. Does anyone wonder what would happen if that kind of thing happened in the private sector, or the outrage if a former corporate employee reported such physical assault as “acceptable in the business we’re in” hearsay on the pages of CNN’s website?

Wie is deze man?

Dit is de onverstoorbare Belgische dichter Herman van Rompuy, Europa’s eerste president. Volgens de Brusselse krant De Standaard is Herman van Rompuy geen superman, maar ook geen watje. Hij is in staat om van hopeloos complexe situaties het beste te maken, ook al is dat inhoudelijk bitter weinig. Hij is geen ruggengraatloze allemansvriend maar kan leven met de begrensdheid van mogelijkheden.
Duidelijk is dat we ons over de relatie met Japan geen zorgen hoeven te maken.

Phuket - Twenty Miss Belgium 2010 contestants began an eight-day stay on Phuket today at the Cape Panwa Hotel and Spa. The beauty pageant finalists are in Phuket by invitation of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and will be taking part in photo and video shoots, kayaking and Thai cooking classes around the island.

Ja dus. Volgens JdeW is dit echt geen kat maar inderdaad een Panthera Pardus, een zwarte panter. De voorbije twee maanden is het dier tientallen keren gespot langs de Frans-Belgische grens. Nu is het gefilmd door een wandelaar in de bossen van Malmedy: de beelden. Ook de politie van Malmedy meent dat het niet om een kat gaat. Wandelen in het bos is voorlopig nog toegestaan.

A black panther known to have been roaming a forest in southern Belgium for several weeks has been spotted near the town of Malmedy, the RTBF channel reported.
It remains unclear how the animal ended up on the loose in Wallonia. German experts who have been called in to catch the creature spotted it on Saturday night, but were unable to get within range to fire a tranquilizer. “The tracks they have traced on the site are undoubtedly those of a panther, and they also saw the animal that night,” police official Emile Delhez said. The specialists, who are using a panther cub as a bait, will need to wait until the panther approaches to within 70-100 meters to tranquilize it. No French or Belgian zoos or circuses have reported the escape of a panther. Local authorities believe the animal fled from a private owner.

Veel Nederlanders zijn niet blij met de voorstellen van de regering om per gereden kilometer belasting te betalen. Waarom niet gewoon op de benzine, is de vraag van velen. Wie veel rijdt, moet meer tanken. Wie een grote auto rijdt, moet vaker tanken. Waarom moet dan iedereen een spionagekastje in de auto?
Ook in Duitsland gaan alle belastingen via de brandstofprijs en er is geen aanschafbelasting in Duitsland. Iedereen betaalt voor hoeveel hij rijdt.
In België pleit de staatssecretaris voor Mobiliteit ook voor de invoering van elektronisch rekeningrijden. ‘Wegentol’ in de hele Benelux als voorbeeld voor de EU. Oppositiepartij LDD is het er niet mee eens. “Een hogere heffing tijdens het spitsuur is pure Kafka, aangezien de overheid de files eerst heeft veroorzaakt door jaren onvoldoende te investeren in weginfrastructuur.”
