Een echtpaar uit Nepal is opgehangen door de buren. Het tweetal werd gedood op advies van een helderziende die het bericht had verspreid dat het paar met hekserij een dorpeling ziek had gemaakt. Het echtpaar behoorde tot de Gurung-bevolking die een minderheid vormt in Nepal. De politie heeft de helderziende samen met twee anderen gearresteerd. Een vierde verdachte [volgens onbevestigde geruchten M. van O.] wist teontkomen.

My wife and I have gotten up before dawn this late August morning to walk from the coast to Ameland — through lots of mud and water. This soggy eight-and-a-half-mile trek has to be timed just right with the tides, but windy conditions can cause the water level to be too high and unsafe for an on-foot crossing. We vierden moederdag met een brunch in New York. Chique Cubaans restaurant. Met de ober kletsten we over “Dia de las madres”, een dag waarop mannen hun moeders en vrouwen eren met het respekt dat hen toekomt.
Met waardering keken we mijn echtgenote na die opstond om met ons zoontje naar het toilet te gaan. Prachtige vrouw.
“Komt u uit Cuba?” vroeg ik.
“Nee, Puerto Rico. Ooit geweest?” vroeg hij.
Op mijn ontkennende antwoord zei hij: “Moet je doen. You will have a lot of fun! But you need to come alone …”. En met een knipoog verwijderde hij zich naar de keuken.

The Mexican government warned its citizens Tuesday to use extreme caution if visiting Arizona because of a tough new law that requires all immigrants and visitors to carry U.S.-issued documents or risk arrest.
Arizona governor Jan Brewer (R) signed a draconian immigration bill into law, which aims to “identify, prosecute and deport” undocumented immigrants.

MailOnline - History in Amsterdam is everywhere, even in our hotel. The Dylan sits conveniently along one of the three major canals in the city centre, the Kiezersgracht.
Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi once walked here and even conducted an orchestra on the old site of the hotel in 1737. It has lost none its appeal. The marble floor in the entrance hall smacks of refinement, but there is not the snobbery that comes with many upmarket hotels.
The upstairs bathroom, with white floorboards and a marble tub, is a dream. Our only problem is that we might be tempted to spend more time here than roaming the city. However, we resist and spend hours in the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh gallery, both of which mark the epicentre of Amsterdam’s history and culture.
The former remains a timely reminder that Britain was once subjected to the rule of a Dutch king in the form of William of Orange…

Tijdens onze vakantie in de Pyreneeën was op een avond onze tienjarige zoon Bob nergens te vinden. Steeds ongeruster alarmeerden we uiteindelijk de camping en met een grote groep mensen zochten we vrijwel de gehele nacht het gebied af. Zonder succes.
Godzijdank kwam hij de volgende ochtend zelf aangelopen. Hij vertelde dat hij was verdwaald en in het donker de weg terug niet had kunnen vinden. Hij had geprobeerd om te slapen maar dat was moeilijk geweest vanwege de koeien die hem voortdurend uit de slaap hadden gehouden.
“Koeien”, vroeg de campinghouder verbaasd, “wat voor geluid maakten die dan?”
“Zoiets als Boohb”, zei Bob.
An integrated approach for the case of table egg production in the Netherlands

In order to research sustainable production of commercial eggs, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture Affairs asked Wageningen University to research new options for the future. In 2006 the results of the study were published in the report Houden van Hennen. The research team studied the areas of conflict between corporate social responsibility, the needs of the laying hen, and an optimum working environment for the poultry farmer.

Naar aanleiding van het verhaal van riversideblues trad, in het commentaar onder het ikjeVerfrissend van zaterdag, publiceert drastiesdit stukje van tien oktober 2008 nog eens. Riversideblues is ondanks alle waarschuwingen opgelicht in Ghana door criminelen die zich voordeden als een vrouw (’red me’) in nood.
Mannen zonder vrouw, vrouwen zonder geld
Je komt ze werkelijk overal tegen: mannen zonder vrouw. En wat je ook overal tegenkomt: vrouwen zonder geld. En dat komt mooi uit blijkt uit dit verhaal gebaseerd op de ervaring van de Belgische correspondent Rik Florin in Nigeria. Hij wordt uit zijn bed gebeld om een arme bedrogen Belg te helpen. Nee, erger nog, twee arme bedrogen Belgen. Een verhaal dat correspondenten in minder ontwikkelde delen van de wereld heel bekend zal voorkomen.
Op een vroege ochtend wordt ik gebeld door een wanhopige landgenoot. Zijn vriendin zou deze morgen op vliegveld Zaventem aankomen. Hij had het geld voor de reis en allerlei onkosten al overgemaakt. Maar helaas, ze is volstrekt buiten haar schuld in de problemen gekomen. En of we onmiddelijk kunnen helpen.
Wanhopige man: “Maar het gaat om een landgenoot.” Uw correspondent:
“Hoe weet u dat het om een landgenoot gaat?”
Wanhopige man:
“Eu, dat zij heeft ze me zelf gezegd.” Uw correspondent:
“Hoe ziet ze er uit?”
Wanhopige man:
“Eu, ik heb haar nog nooit gezien.”
Uw correspondent:
“Wat is er mis met haar?”
Wanhopige man:
“Ze is bestolen van al haar papieren en jullie moeten haar onmiddellijk helpen.”
De ontnuchtering volgt, wanneer al snel blijkt dat het verhaal weer eens niet klopt.
Het vervolg gaat dan vaak zo. Wanhopige man: “Jullie moeten mij onmiddellijk helpen om deze persoon op te sporen zodat ik mijn geld terug kan krijgen.” Uw correspondent:
“U beseft dat er in Nigeria geen vaste adressen bestaan en geen bevolkingsregister is? En u wilt dat ik, Uw correspondent, deze fictieve persoon ga opsporen?”
Er zijn gevallen waarin die vraag met ‘ja’ wordt beantwoord.
Landgenoten? Correspondenten kunnen er niet genoeg van krijgen.
