ScienceDaily - Variations in atmosphere carbon dioxide around 40 million years ago were tightly coupled to changes in global temperature, according to new findings published in the journal Science. The study was led by scientists at Utrecht University, working with colleagues at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and the University of Southampton.
The researchers are Peter Bijl, Alexander Houben, Appy Sluijs, Henk Brinkhuis, Gert-Jan Reichart (Utrecht University), Jaap Sinninghe Damsté and Stefan Schouten (NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research) and Steven Bohaty (SOES). The research was funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Utrecht University and Statoil, and used samples and data provided by the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP).

Science Daily: At the current pace of research and development, global oil will run out 90 years before replacement technologies are ready, says a new University of California, Davis, study based on stock market expectations. The forecast was published online on Nov. 8 in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. It is based on the theory that long-term investors are good predictors of whether and when new energy technologies will become commonplace.
“Our results suggest it will take a long time before renewable replacement fuels can be self-sustaining, at least from a market perspective,” said study author Debbie Niemeier, a UC Davis professor of civil and environmental engineering.

De grafiek geeft, op basis van door iedereen te controleren gegevens, weer dat de aarde opwarmt. Het bedrag is uitgeloofd voor degene die kan bewijzen dat Mann onderzoeksgeld op oneigenlijke wijze heeft gebruikt. Vindt u het raar dat Mann de verdenking uitspreekt dat Amerikanen op hoog niveau het debat over het klimaat manipuleren?
Eerder werden emails van hem gehacked. Het inbreken in computers en uitloven van geld geeft aan hoe rechts Amerika te werk gaat in het klimaatdebat: met geld en geweld. Klimatologen gaan zich nu organiseren tegen de (in)directe bedreigingen van door Big Oil en Big Coal gefinancierde bullies.

Een verandering in de hoeveelheid CO2 in de atmosfeer heeft op lange geologische tijdschalen een sterk verband met verandering in de temperatuur. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van paleoklimatologen van de Universiteit Utrecht, het NIOZ Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Zeeonderzoek en de Universiteit van Southampton. De resultaten werden 5 november gepubliceerd in het toonaangevende wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Science.

Democrats, declared Evan Bayh in an Op-Ed article on Wednesday in The Times, “overreached by focusing on health care rather than job creation during a severe recession.” Many others have been saying the same thing: the notion that the Obama administration erred by not focusing on the economy is hardening into conventional wisdom.

Zo vindt de Nijmeegse hoogleraar sociale psychologie Roos Vonk de verbanden tussen het hebben van een vaste relatie enerzijds, en geluk en gezondheid ‘niet zo sterk en eenduidig’. Volgens Vonk is het vooral een goede en gezonde publiciteitsstunt van VGZ.

Kroegen zetten bezoekers die doen alsof ze dronken zijn zonder schroom drank voor. Bij een steekproef kregen ‘dronken’ acteurs in 24 van de 30 kroegen gewoon drank. Het is verboden om alcohol te verkopen aan dronken mensen. Een barman zei tegen een acteur dat het goed is zolang hij net doet alsof hij nog kan staan.
Het onderzoek werd gedaan door het Nederlands Instituut voor Alcoholbeleid en de Universiteit Twente.

Children and teenagers are particularly susceptible to cellphone radiation

In “Disconnect,” Devra Davis looks at the disturbing connection between cellphones and health problems. Recent studies have tied cellphone use to rises in brain damage, cheek cancer and malfunctioning sperm. She reveals the unsettling fact that many new cellphones now come with the small-print warning that they are to be kept at least one-inch from the ear (presumably for safety reasons) and many insurance companies refuse to insure cellphone companies against health-related claims. Most troubling of all, science has shown that children and teenagers are particularly susceptible to cellphone radiation, raising questions about its effects on coming generations.

What is the most compelling evidence that links cellphones to brain cancer?

The brain cancer connection is in fact a very complicated one. Cancer can take a long time to develop. After the Hiroshima bomb fell, there was no increase in brain cancer for 10 years, even 20 years afterward. Forty years later, there was a significant increase in brain cancer in people who survived the bombing. Now, for studies of people who have been heavy cellphone users (defined as someone who has made a half-hour call a day for 10 years), there is a 50 percent increase in brain cancer overall. And among the heaviest users there’s a two- to fourfold increased risk. whole story

President Obama said on monday that he hopes Peter Diamond, who just received a Nobel Prize in economics, “will be confirmed by the Senate as quickly as possible” for a spot on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. The confirmation has for months been blocked by Republican Alabama Senator Richard Shelby, who claims Diamond doesn’t have proper “macroeconomic experience.”

Federal Reserve Board nominee Peter Diamond won the Nobel Prize in Economics along with two of his colleagues. Yet, despite the fact that President Obama nominated this Nobel laureate to the Fed almost six months ago, his nomination is currently being blocked by just one senator. Sen. De Universiteit van Keele vond dat mensen die schelden hun hand langer in ijskoud water kunnen houden dan mensen die dat niet doen. De Britse universiteit kreeg voor het onderzoek de Ig Nobelprijs voor de Vrede.
Dit jaar ging de Nobelprijs voor Gezondheid naar Nederlanders die uitvonden dat een ritje in een achtbaan helpt tegen een aanval van astma. Zij kregen de prijs uit handen van de bij Tsjernobyl wooonachtige Oekraïense wetenschapster, Elena Bodnar. Zij vond de noodbeha uit die in noodgevallen - ontploffende kernreactors - kan worden omgevormd tot twee mondmaskertjes. De hele reddingsoperatie duurt 25 seconden. Bodnar: “Vijf seconden om de beha te verwijderen en om te bouwen en 20 seconden om te beslissen welke man je wilt redden.”

Annual Ig Nobel awards for the most ‘improbable’ research

The Ig Nobels, designed to honour achievements that first make people laugh and then make them think. They are given out at a Harvard University ceremony by the science humour magazine, Annals of Improbable Research.
The Peace Prize went to Keele University who discovered that swearing actually reduces pain. They found volunteers were able to submerge a hand into iced water for longer if they repeated a swear word “you might use after hitting yourself on the thumb with a hammer”.

How far is nearby?
Nearby in interstellar space is in this case about twenty light-years away from earth, 100 million trillion miles. It would take the fastest spacecrafts from earth ever to have flown, Voyagers 1 and 2, hundreds of thousand of years to reach the planet, designated 581g. So, we won’t be visiting anytime soon.

The new planet, estimated by NASA researchers to be about three times as massive as the earth, orbits a red dwarf star called Gliese 581 every 36 days at a distance of about 13 million miles. The system is about 20 light-years away from earth.
And 581g is about 13 million miles away from its star, which puts it smack dab in the middle of Gliese’s Goldilock’s zone, not too hot, not too cold, just right for water to exist as a liquid. [read on] (more…)

U weet wel Oxford waar Benazir Bhutto, Solomon Bandaranaika, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher enzo hebben gestudeerd.
O’Donnell vertegenwoordigt de Tea Party bij de komende tussentijdse verkiezingen in de VS. Ze gelooft wel in heksen maar niet in evolutie.
