Why this Dutch teenager could be the next Rupert Murdoch.
It was inevitable that popular Twitter accounts with a significant following would become commoditised. And fitting, in the restless terrain of the media world, that the first instance of such a thing should be in breaking news.
So we have today’s news that @BreakingNews has been taken over by MSNBC.com. The Twitter account started by Dutch media junkie Michael van Poppel has amassed close to 1.5m followers in two years, thanks to its lightning fast reports, often from the field and sometimes even before the authorities or emergency services have been alerted.

So, congratulations to Van Poppel and his team, and to MSNBC.com for taking steps in a direction that others are sure to follow. But it does beg the question of whether the new bods behind the account can meet audience expectations without shedding followers faster than rats off a sinking ship.
Negative sentiment has started swirling up through the ranks, with some users saying the service is already slower than it was, and others lamenting their beloved independent’s choice of bedfellows.
Still, if MSNB.com screws the pooch on this one, it’s still a winner for Van Poppel’s professional news wire service, launching next year. It should also drive sales of the BNO News iPhone app Van Poppel announced in August. The kid (he’s not yet 20) is definitely one to watch.
