All Republican candidates for president want to stop abortions in the U.S., most even for raped women. Mitt Romney was once pro choice (allowing regulated abortions). But now that he is trying to get elected as the Republican nominee by teabaggers and fundamentalist Christians he's against it. Indeed, Republicans even want to restrict access to contraception.
Of course everyone wants to limit abortion as much as possible, so what is the best way to achieve that? In for example the Netherlands (Western Europe) abortion rates are much lower than in the U.S. Also the Dutch have a very liberal abortion policy.
According to a new report from the Guttmacher Institute, highly restrictive abortion laws do not lead to lower abortion rates. Globally, nations with more restrictive abortion laws, like in Latin American and Africa, also have a higher number of unsafe abortions and deaths.
This chart compares regional abortion rates to abortion policies and shows that women living under Western Europe’s liberal laws undergo fewer abortions than those in more restrictive countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
