Dat meent neocon Norman Pothoretz, adviseur van de gedoodverfde Republikeinse presidentskandidaat Giuliani. Een van de scenario's is dat Israel met goedkeuring van de VS Iran aanvalt en Iran reageert met een tegenaanval. Bush zal dan Israel zogenaamd 'helpen'. Gisteren zei Bush volgens FoxNews dat hij Iran zal aanvallen als dat land Israel aanvalt. Norman Podhoretz, who is also a foreign policy adviser to Rudy Giuliani, repeated his claim last night that there is "only one terrible choice" left with Iran, which is to "bomb" their "facilities" and "retard" their nuclear program. When Newsweek's Fareed Zackaria asserted that deterrence was a viable option, Podhoretz repeatedly accused him of "an irresponsible complacency" that "is comparable to the denial in the early ’30s of the intentions of Hitler."

Georgia Court Orders Release Of Man Jailed For Consensual Sex As Teen

Georgia's Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of a young man who has been imprisoned for more than two years for having consensual oral sex with another teenager. The court ruled 4-3 that Genarlow Wilson's 10-year sentence was cruel and unusual punishment. Wilson, 21, was convicted of aggravated child molestation following a 2003 New Year's Eve party at a Douglas County hotel room where he was videotaped having oral sex with a 15-year-old girl. Scientists denounce White House censoring.

Scientists and public and environmental health experts today "overwhelmingly denounced" the White House's editing of CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding's congressional testimony on global warming. They called the edits "frustrating, terrible and appalling," and acknowledged that the White House is denying widely accepted scientific conclusions:

Speaking during a stop in South Carolina today, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) downplayed the Iraq insurgency as child's play. The insurgency is made up of "a bunch of kids with improvised explosive devices," Thompson said:

This morning on Fox News, hosts of the show Fox and Friends blamed the wildfires in California on a new culprit: al Qaeda. They pointed to a 2003 FBI memo, which raised the possibility that al Qaeda may try to set wildfires around the western United States. They also noted that men in a "hovering helicopter" saw "a guy starting one of these fires." Later in the segment, host Steve Doocy acknowledged that in memo, al Qaeda didn't even mention California. AEI's Muravchik: 'I Don't Mind If We Bomb Iran Next Month Or The Month After'

AEI scholar Joshua Muravchik has consistently pushed for war with Iran. In Nov. 2006, for example, Muravchik wrote an LA Times op-ed called simply, "Bomb Iran." But as his appearance on MSNBC's Hardball yesterday demonstrated, Muravchik's calls for war with Iran aren't based on any real evidence. When host Chris Matthews asked how long it will take the Iranians to develop a nuclear weapon "that could be transported by a terrorist group," Muravchik admitted he didnt know how long it will take them. Muravchik's comments came on the same day that IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei confirmed that it would take Iran three to eight years to build a nuclear weapon. Nevertheless, Muravchik added, "I don't mind if we bomb next month or the month after. I think we have to do it sometime in a short time frame." President Bush faalt op alle fronten. Daar zijn Amerikanen langzamerhand ook achter, zo blijkt uit de laatste peiling. Zij menen in grote getale dat zijn buitenlandse beleid niet werkt. Ook denken ze dat de toestand niet zal verbeteren tijdens zijn bestuur. Van de Amerikanen denkt 79 pct dat de wereld voor de VS gevaarlijker is geworden en 64 pct dat de buitenwereld negatief over de VS denkt.

Op weg naar het congres 'Inzicht in Autisme', kom ik met de routebeschrijving in de hand het station uit. Een duidelijke medecongresganger kijkt met net zo'n beschrijving rond. We lopen samen verder naar het congrescentrum. Onderweg praten over het werkveld en waar we zoal tegenaan lopen. We zitten opvallend op een lijn. Bij de receptie van het congresgebouw neemt een dame onze toegangskaarten in. "U mag hier naar beneden voor Autisme", zegt ze tegen mij. Ron Paul (R-TX) said, "I think the American people - if we as a party realize this and understand it - seventy-some percent of the people in America want the war over with. Amerika krioelt van de Chamberlains. Een nieuwe CNN peiling geeft aan hoe ver de huidige neoconservatieve kliek, die in de Verenigde Staten aan de macht is, afstaat van de grote meerderheid van het Amerikaanse volk. After Rep. Pete Stark made his harsh statements against the Republicans and Bush over the SCHIP veto, the right wingers are trying to change the subject again by feigning outrage against him. Stark also didn't fall for the MoveOn ad outrage also. Good for him.

In zijn onnavolgbare brabbeltaaltje zei Bush dit: "Ik heb mensen gezegd dat als je geinteresseerd bent in het voorkomen van Wereldoorlog III, het me toeschijnt dat je ook geinteresseerd moet zijn in het voorkomen dat hullie de kennis krijgen die noodzakelijk is om nucleaire wapens te maken." *Voor alle duidelijkheid: de noodzakelijke kennis om een atoombom te maken kun je binnen 10 seconden verkrijgen door op het internet te Google'en: 'build atom bomb'. De politie is diverse VN-kantoren in Yangon binnengevallen. Het regime verdenkt de medewerkers ervan activisten te hebben geholpen bij het verspreiden, via internet en satelliettelefoons, van foto's van, en informatie over, de demonstraties. Former top general rips Bush's Iraq policy.

Retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez blasted the Bush administration today for a "catastrophically flawed, unrealistically optimistic war plan" and denounced the current "surge" strategy as a "desperate" move that will not achieve long-term stability. The New York Times reports that Sanchez is "the most senior in a string of retired generals to harshly criticize the administration's conduct of the war." More:

"There was been a glaring and unfortunate display of incompetent strategic leadership within our national leaders," he said, adding later in his remarks that civilian officials have been "derelict in their duties" and guilty of a "lust for power."
