What's in a name? Well, … (in overleg met Beemk, m)*

there’s fortune to start with. Here are some names of real people:

Justin Case. Barb Dwyer. Stan Still. Terry Bull. Paige Turner. Mary Christmas. Anna Sasin. Doug Hole. Hazel Nutt.  

The names were uncovered by researchers from parenting group TheBabyWebsite.com after trawling through telephone records.

Some people, think: Rose Bush, receive positive comments.

Spare a thought, though, for Anna Prentice, Annette Curtain, Bill Board, Pearl Button, Jo King, Barry Cade, Tim Burr, Daisy Picking and Ivy Plant.

There are also some real people with job-specific names, including Dr Leslie Doctor and Les Plack (a dentist). Even some firms are ‘appropriately’ named:

Vladimir Lenin seizes power from the czarist regime in a stunning coup d'etat. Widespread starvation and catastrophic military failure in World War I left Russia ripe for revolt.Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate on March 15, 1917, and an ineffectual provincial government was established in his place.

 

Contemptuous of what the revolution had accomplished thus far, Lenin returned from exile in Switzerland to spark his Bolshevik revolutionaries, culminating in the coup of November 07. He led the Soviet Union until his death in 1924 and was succeeded by Joseph Stalin.

Amerikanen zijn het grappigste volk ter wereld. Gevolgd door de Spanjaarden!?
Duitsers hebben het minste humor.
Dat is het oordeel van 30.000 mensen op een peiling van de sociale netwerksite Badoo. 
Men kon kiezen uit 15 landen.
De Britten die slechts zevende werden, tonen zich 'not amused'. En de Duitsers?
Die zien de humor van dit soort peilingen niet in.

Hoe doet Nederland het?
Laten we deze lijst nemen. De toptien van minst grappge landen. Daarin staat Nederland bijna onderaan. Goed dus!

Ik hoop wel dat het geen wapen is.
Zo beschrijft de amateur astronoom David Martines  het gebouw dat hij met zijn telescoop Google Earth heeft gevonden op Mars. Het is cylindrisch, 200 meter lang en vijftig meter breed.

Volgens Martines is het onwaarschijnlijk dat de NASA er iets mee te maken heeft. 
"Ik denk niet dat ze al dat materiaal ongezien naar boven zouden krijgen", gokt hij.
"Ik betwijfel zelfs of de NASA hier überhaupt van op de hoogte is."
Martines is nu op zoek naar een beeld met een hogere resolutie, als dat al bestaat.

Of is het toch een ski-resort?

De amateur-astronoom zegt dat de coördinaten van het Bio Station Alpha de volgende zijn: 71 49'19.73"N 29 33'06.53"W. Iedereen die dezelfde software heeft, kan het zelf met eigen ogen zien.

Sceptici vergelijken de 'vondst' van Martines met het beruchte 'Marsgezicht' dat uiteindelijk een rotsformatie...

Waarom is uw voedsel zo duur? Behalve komkommers, tomaten en taugé   dan.
Dat komt mede omdat voedsel een speelbal is geworden in de handen van grote beleggingsondsen. In dit vandaag gepubliceerde VN-rapport wordt op een rijtje gezet hoe door middel van nieuwe financië le instrumenten de speculatieve invloed op de prijs van voedsel sterk is toegenomen. 
Uiteraard moet handel in produkten mogelijk blijven, ook in produkten die nog niet zijn geleverd (futures). Maar daaraan moeten grenzen worden gesteld.
De stijging van de voedselprijzen is overigens niet voor iedereen een probleem. Ze is nadelig voor de consumenten in de grote steden maar voordelig voor de producenten op het platteland.

Is there really genuine anti-war sentiment growing among the GOP?  I sincerely doubt it.  If the last two years have taught us anything, it's that the true test of the authenticity of claimed political convictions is whether they endure regardless of which party controls the White House.

Eindhoven is het slimste ter wereld.
Let wel, in onderstaand bericht wordt niets gezegd over Eindhovenaren.
Volgens de internationale denktank ICF (Intelligent Community Forum) is Eindhoven "een foorbeeld foor een nieuwe manier van denken over samenwerking en regionale ontwikkeling."
Jaarlijks maakt ICF, een club van nerds zeg maar, een ranglijst van 's werelds slimste gemeenschappen.

 En het houdt niet op want drasties heeft ook geweldig nieuws voor Helmond en Veldhoven.
U begrijpt het al: Ook de slimste van de wereld.

De hele regio wordt geroemd als kloppend hart van Nederland op het gebied van ICT. De afgelopen jaren werden er 55.000 arbeidsplaatsen gecreëerd in de technologiesector.
Kortom we mogen Eindhoven gerust de Silicon Valley van Noord-Brabant noemen.

Hoho, niet te snel oordelen mensen. Even afwachten hoe de nieuwe, keiharde aanpak van soft drugs door Nederland uitpakt. Nog even en dan zitten de gevangenissen hier overvol met toeristen die zonder vergunning met een joint zijn betrapt.

TPM Muckraker - The Global Commission on Drug Policy, which includes several former heads of state and UN officials, has released a report calling the global war on drugs a failure.
"The global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world," the report reads.

The report calls for an end to the "criminalization, marginalization and stigmatization of people who use drugs but who do no harm to others," and for governments to experiment with ways to regulate drugs so as to undercut organized crime and improve public health. 

The discussion over raising the debt ceiling in the U.S. is quite bizar.
Thanks to presidents like Bill Clinton the level of American debt is not very high by global standards.

In veel landen wordt gediscussieerd over het legaliseren van het huwelijk tussen homosexuelen.
Niet in de Filippijnen. Dat land is nog niet toegekomen aan het legaliseren van echtscheiden.
De Filippijnen is het laatste land ter wereld waar dat wettelijk niet is toegestaan, nu op Malta de wet is gewijzigd.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , said in a speech to the U.S. Congress yesterday that Israel does not occupy the West Bank, American lawmakers agreed with a standing ovation.

Netanyahu: "As the leader of Israel, it is my responsibility to lead my people to peace. Now, this is not easy for me. It’s not easy because I recognize that in a genuine peace, we will be required to give up parts of the ancestral Jewish homeland. You have to understand this, in Judea and Samaria, the Jewish people are not foreign occupiers."

Under international law the West Bank is considered occupied territory, something even hawkish former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon acknowledged. “You cannot like the word, but what is happening is an occupation — to hold 3.5 million Palestinians under occupation." 
Yet, seconds after Netanyahu said “the Jewish people are not foreign occupiers” of the West Bank, the U.S. Congress erupted with a rousing standing ovation.

Like with the articles on vaccination by Andrew Wakefield. The fraud who tried to make money of the despair of parents of kids with autism.
And sometimes racism is presented as science. 
This article by scientist Satoshi Kanazawa is so amazingly stupid that one wonders how it ever passed the editors desk.
Anywhay, get Trump!
The editor at Psychology Today and evolutionary psychologist Kanazawa at Louisiana State University should both get fired. 

How stupid is this unveiled racism? Well try to understand this sentence.

Do you want to know why the price of about everything is going up? Why the price of almost all commodities (oil, gas, ion, platinum, sugar, coffee, cacao, wheat to name a few) is rising almost constantly?  A report of the United Nations Environment Program analyses the growing consumpting in the world and where in the future all the stuff has to come from.

"The reality is that there is another billion middle-class consumers on the way as a result of rapid industrialisation in developing countries."

So, what to do? Another UNEP report list what young people around the wold think about sustainablity.

Je hebt bermtoeristen, ramptoeristen, drugstoeristen, sterftoeristen, sextoeristen, virtuele toeristen...
Maar wat ik niet kende zijn datumtoeristen. Dat blijken mensen te zijn die op dezelfde datum, maar op twee verschillende plaatsen, hun verjaardag vieren, trouwen of sterven.

Vanaf volgend jaar wordt dat heel gemakkelijk in Samoa. Datum toerisme dus. Nu begint de nieuwe dag daar bijna een dag later dan bij de buren Australië  en Nieuw Zeeland en daar wil men vanaf. Dat doet men door donderdag 29 december over te slaan. Samoa is vanaf dat moment ideaal voor datumtoeristen aangezien Amerikaans Samoa - slechts op een uurtje zwemmen - wel de oude datum aanhoudt. 

Ook interessant. Samoa, met 179.000 inwoners, werd in 1722 ontdekt door de Nederlander Jacob Roggeveen, schrijft het ANP. Met andere woorden, daarvoor bestond het niet .
En tenslotte een waarschuwing voor donderdag toeristen. Om teleurstellingen te voorkomen, mijdt Samoa op 29 december. Er zal geen donderdag...

Dat de Nederlandse keuken niet zo bekend is als de Italiaanse of de Franse wordt vaak zonder meer aangenomen hoewel JdeW nooit het wetenschappelijke bewijs van die stelling heeft gezien. Maar in dit artikel van Lori Timmer in HollandSentinel wordt zelfs beweerd dat de Duitse keuken bekender dan de Nederlandse? .Dat kan toch niet waar zijn? Tenzij zuurkool een Duitse uitvinding is natuurlijk. Timmer geeft wel het recept voor de wereldberoemde Nederlandse saucijsenbroodjes en amandel koekjes.
