De Republikeinen proberen het stimuleringsplan van de Obama-regering tegen te houden in de Senaat. Dat kunnen ze doen door te filibusteren (blokkeren), hetgeen inhoudt dat een meerderheid van 60 van de 100 senators nodig is om iets aan te nemen. Het woord ‘filibuster’ is afkomstig uit het Nederlands. Het is afgeleid van vrijbuiter en kan in dit verband worden gezien als het kidnappen van het parlementaire debat.
Nou en, zegt u? Wat heb ik daaar mee te maken? Wel heel wat. Kijk bijvoorbeeld maar eens naar de aandelenmarkt in uw land als de Republikeinen slagen in het blokkeren van de stimulans. Geen oppepper van de Amerikaanse economie kan van een zware recessie een depressie maken.

We can understand why a extreme partisan like Rush Limbaugh wants President Obama’s Jobs program to fail….but the Members of Congress elected to represent the citizens in their districts?… that’s another matter.
