“We’ve always known that America’s reign as the world’s greatest nation would eventually end. But most of us imagined that our downfall, when it came, would be something grand and tragic.
What we’re getting instead is less a tragedy than a deadly farce. Instead of fraying under the strain of imperial overstretch, we’re paralyzed by procedure. Instead of re-enacting the decline and fall of Rome, we’re re-enacting the dissolution of 18th-century Poland.”

After the dissolution of Poland, a Polish officer serving under Napoleon penned a song that eventually — after the country’s post-World War I resurrection — became the country’s national anthem. It begins, “Poland is not yet lost.”

Rome fell, eventually, due to Imperial overreach. But Poland fell (in fact, its entire territory was swallowed up by its neighbors), because of the gridlock of its legislature. Krugman is absolutely correct that we have more to fear from the ineptitude and gridlock of the Senate than from any imperialism we’re involved in at this moment in time.

Like with us, the legislative gridlock in Poland took a long time to weaken the country and the inability for the country to solve its own problems finally resulted in its being swallowed up , little by little, by its neighbors while it dithered and debated.

Our Senate is now acting out a replay of the endless debating and gridlock of the Polish legislature of the time, with the same effect - the country’s problems, the people’s problems are not being solved, and our global economic power, our ability to innovate and produce, is being strangled by the stagnation and obstruction in the federal legislature.
