DEMOCRACY IN ASIA? BEWARE OF THAILAND.

In modern democracies, countries give themselves an electoral system, then hold elections, and the winner rules for the established period of time. Massive protests sometimes can push governments to send citizens to the ballots at an earlier date, but this is the exception to the rule. Governments brought into power by the shouting of a mob may be revolutionary, but they are not democratic.
That situation seems to occur in Thailand, where street protests have cried for new elections three times in as many years. However, the government won the elections each time and belied the protesters, who then proved to represent only a minority of society.
When a minority imposes its will on the majority, it is not a democracy - it is a dictatorship.

Fox News losing its lead over rival cable networks.

Fox News “has seen its once formidable advantage over CNN erode in this presidential election year, as both CNN and MSNBC have added viewers at far more dramatic rates.” The New York Times reports:
CNN has added 170,000 viewers a night, on average, when compared with the last presidential year, while Fox has shed about 90,000, according to Nielsen. (MSNBC, which added 181,000 viewers in that audience, much of it courtesy of gains by “Countdown With Keith Olbermann,” still lagged in third place, with 303,000).
A Fox News spokeswoman, Dana Klinghoffer, refused “several requests” for comment about the channel’s ratings and strategy.
Update: Steve Benen writes, “[A]s the conservative movement falls apart, and the country is ready to move away from the Bush/Republican status quo, Fox News’ schtick has grown pretty tiresome.”

Yesterday, the Belgian newspaper De Standaard published a double interview with the Dutch politician Geert Wilders and the Flemish politician Jean-Marie Dedecker.
Dedecker is a populist right-wing politician who was ousted by the Flemish Liberal Party and founded the Lijst Dedecker (LDD) or Gezond Verstand Partij (Common Sense Party). He won 5.5% of the Flemish vote in the 2007, elections, mainly at the expense of the Flemish-secessionist and anti-Islamist Vlaams Belang party. According to the latest polls Dedecker is currently at 12.4%.
Geert Wilders, who was ousted by the governing Dutch Liberal Party in 2004
and also founded his own party, the Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV, Freedom Party) won 5.9% of the Dutch vote in the November 22, 2006, elections with an anti-Islamist platform. Polls predict that his party will double in size. Wilders’ spectacular growth has, however, been stopped by Rita Verdonk, another former member of the Dutch Liberal Party (and a former Dutch Immigration minister), who was ousted in 2007 and founded Trots op Nederland (TON, Proud to be Dutch). Verdonk is opposed to immigration but does not criticize Islam. In the polls she is doing better than Wilders.

Excerpts from the interview with Geert Wilders and Jean Marie Dedecker:

De Standaard: There are large differences between the two of you. Mr Dedecker is opposed to prohibiting things, whereas you [Geert Wilders] want to prohibit all kinds of things, starting with the Koran. […]
Wilders: That I want to prohibit all sort of things is complete nonsense. I only want to prohibit things to defend our rule of law. I am still enough of a liberal to prohibit things only in the most extreme cases. I do not like to prohibit books at all. You will never hear me advocate prohibiting other books.
De Standaard: Do you also feel that our rule of law is threatened in this way, Mr Dedecker?
Dedecker: I feel threatened by the fact that the separation between church and state is diminishing. But I have no existential angst. There are two major phobias at present in our society: Islamophobia and climatophobia. Both are being promoted.
(To Wilders) You think that Eurabia is a danger. I disagree. Our enlightenment values are strong enough to withstand this. However, we have to wake up. What the politically correct Left has done to our society explains our [electoral] success.
Wilders: If you say that we must wake up, this means that the leftist political elite is sleeping at this moment. That is exactly the reason why our enlightenment ideas do not prevail. Because those leftist politicians, who have become ever more dependent on [the votes of] immigrant groups, will sleep on.
Dedecker: I think prohibiting the Koran is a form of overacting. We shouldn’t prohibit any books: neither Mein Kampf nor the Koran. The Bible, the Thora and the Koran are but fairy tale books. That is what you have to dare tell the people. If religion manifests itself as collective madness, then we must dare to oppose it and start the debate.
Wilders: The Koran is a diabolic book rather than a fairy tale book. It is also, unlike the other books which you refer to - and which I would not call fairy tale books, but it is your right to do so - a book from which people draw inspiration today to commit terrorist acts and exclude women and homosexuals from my community and execrate the separation of church and state. Fairy tale books do not do such things. Fairy tale books concern the Efteling or Walibi [Dutch and Belgian theme parks; equivalents of Disneyland]
Dedecker: I am opposed to the wearing of headscarfs by civil servants, I am opposed to separate swimming hours [for men and women] in swimming pools, but is this a reason to prohibit the Koran? On the contrary, I am one hundred percent behind our own values. And I am as much criticised for this as you. […]
[To Wilders] Up to a certain extent you are also a Zionist. I find that very strange of you.
Wilders: A Zionist? What next?
Dedecker: The way you always defend Israel - as a matter of fact this happens much more in the Netherlands than in Belgium. We both have visited Israel and the Palestinian territories. I consider Zionism and Islamism as similar phenomena. You constantly defend Israel although you know what is being inflicted there on the Palestinians. Do you do that perhaps because Zionism is the counterpart of Islamism?
Wilders: It is interesting that you say this. Zionist goes perhaps a bit far, but I am, indeed, a convinced defender of Israel. Because Israel is an oasis of democracy and Western values in the Middle East. I have also been in other countries in the region, from Syria via Iran to Afghanistan: all these countries are dictatorships. Israel is the only country where a majority in parliament can dismiss a minister - as members of parliament you and I should be able to appreciate that.
I am biased in favour of Israel. Is that so bad? No, I am even proud of it. You have to make up your own mind, but you, too, should be proud of every democracy in the world.
Dedecker: You are partly right. But that does not justify Israel’s apartheid policies - and that is exactly what I reject. I call Israel a kippah democracy.
Wilders: I have a different opinion. Palestinians who are living in Gaza and on the West Bank at this moment, could very well move to the other side of the Jordan - to Jordan or other areas. There is space and place enough there and many Palestinians already live there.
De Standaard: So you also favour ethnic cleansing?
Wilders: That is not ethnic cleansing. Israel can justly claim those regions. Moreover we do not have to harm anyone, but I see what happens today: Hamastan, governs Gaza.
Dedecker: Why should the Palestinians have to go to Jordan? The Palestinians are the outcasts of the Middle East: they are not welcome anywhere. These are people who were driven from their territory on the basis of an international treaty and pseudo property rights granted by the Thora or the Bible. Property rights on the basis of fairy tale books.
Wilders: For me the security of Israel as a democracy prevails on the rights of a group who is to a large extent guilty of terror and corruption. There is no democratic Palestinian authority - that is the sad truth. I am convinced that the attacks which Israel suffers from radical Islam are attacks aimed at us.
Dedecker: Isn’t it the opposite? Research shows that three fourth of the suicide terrorists are motivated by the fate of the Palestinians. If we solve that situation, would it not lead to a safer world for all of us? Meanwhile we spend billions and billions on our security.

DUTCH DRIVER STROUS WINS FIRST ATLANTIC CHAMP CAR RACE.

Dutch driver Junior Strous raced to his first Atlantic race victory Sunday, leading every lap in the 30-lap race that ended under a full-course caution at Canadian Circuit Mont-Tremblant.
Strous drove the No. 6 Condor Motorsports/Team Holland machine, giving the team its second straight victory at Mont-Tremblant. The victory also gave Strous a 74-67 lead over to Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe in the season standings. Hinchcliffe was fourth Sunday. The winner of Champ Car Atlantic earns a $2 million grant so he can move up to Champ Car World Series.
“This first career victory feels so good,” Strous said. “We had a clean sweep this weekend, had the pole position, won the race and had the fastest race lap. I took the lead in the championship, so obviously, I’m really happy with that. We needed this.”

Ik zie altijd wel lichtpuntjes: het is hier niet zo erg als in Darfur of in Bagdad. Hitler, Stalin en Mobutu waren veel grotere boeven dan Mugabe.
Ons bedrijf loopt goed.
We hebben het druk. Druk met klanten, die aan de lopende band vliegtickets boeken, ze betalen in buitenlandse deviezen. Internetboekingen zijn niet populair hier, omdat de internetverbindingen niet snel genoeg zijn.We zorgen ervoor dat er tijdig brandstof wordt besteld, want je kunt niet zomaar even gaan tanken bij het tankstation. De generator moet werken, want gemiddeld zit je een dag per week zonder elektriciteit. Als je water hebt, vul je je zwembad. Want soms heb je twee weken, of zelfs langer, geen stromend water.
Het personeel heeft geld nodig om met het openbaar vervoer naar het werk te komen. Een hele klus. Twee weken geleden kostte een ritje met een minibusje 500 miljoen, vandaag is het vier keer zoveel. Het abnormale wordt routine. Alles went.
Een vergelijking die de ronde doet, is deze:
Zimbabweanen zijn net kikkers die in een grote kookpot op een zacht vuurtje staan. Ze worden langzaam maar zeker gekookt, maar ze springen er niet uit, alles went tot de dood erop volgt. Zou je een kikker in het kokende water gooien dan spring hij er uit en overleeft.

Hij zat een tijd in Westerbork na de oorlog.
Die Joodse mensen bleken Dachau te hebben overleefd.
Mijn Pa daarentegen heeft een NSB-er voor z’n bek geslagen. Is niet opgepakt, want de invloed van de aangetrouwde familie was dermate groot, dat dat niet gebeurde.
Als de moffen de A-bom eerder hadden gehad, sprak ik nu Duits en had ik nooit geweten van Kandinsky/Mondriaan en… Bluesmuziek/R&R. Allemaal ‘entartete kunst’.
London had niet meer bestaan, heette nu vermoedelijk Eva BraunStadt. New York: Neu Berlin.
Ik zou het overleefd hebben, vanwege connecties hier en daar.

En - dat is nu weer de mazzel van Bush - het ligt geheel aan de inwoners van San Francisco. In november van dit jaar, bij de presidentsverkiezingen, zal de stad ook stemmen over de naamswijziging van hun riolen. Aangezien het gaat om Amerika’s meest vooruitstrevende stad, zal met aan zekerheid grenzende waarschijnlijkheid dit eerbetoon George W. Bush ten deel vallen. Zodat deze president op gepaste wijze voor altijd in de herinnering van het Amerikaanse volk kan blijven voortleven.

SAN FRANCISCO TO VOTE ON NAMING THEIR SEWER AFTER GEORGE W. BUSH.

In November, alongside casting their ballot for the next president, the people of San Francisco will also vote on a measure to rename one of the city’s largest sewage works the George W Bush Sewage Plant, to provide a “fitting monument” to the outgoing commander-in-chief’s achievements.
Activists from the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco, a mischievously-named group behind the move, will ask supporters to participate in a “synchronised flush”
It may sound like a student prank, but the proposal is almost certain to be passed. Democrats usually secure between 70 and 80 per cent of the vote in San Francisco - and in 2006 passed a proposition to impeach Mr Bush and his Vice-President Dick Cheney by a majority of almost two to one.

Pentagon: Taliban growing into a ‘resilient insurgency’.

According to a new Pentagon report released today, “the Taliban has regrouped after its initial fall from power in Afghanistan. The new report offers a rather dim view of progress in the nearly 7-year-old war, declaring that the Taliban has ‘coalesced into a resilient insurgency’:”

Noting that insurgent violence continues to climb, the report said that despite efforts to capture and kill key leaders, the Taliban is likely to “maintain or even increase the scope and pace of its terrorist attacks and bombings in 2008.” At the same time, the Afghan Army and national police are progressing slowly, and still lack the trainers they need.

The report comes as the “number of foreign forces in Afghanistan killed in June has reached 39, the highest monthly toll of the war,” as CNN reported yesterday. More on Afghanistan in today’s Progress Report.

Cheney ‘tried to block North Korea nuclear deal’.

Earlier this week, the Bush administration the Bush administration announced that it was taking North Korea off the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism after the country declared its nuclear program to the outside world. Vice President Dick Cheney has not hid his disapproval of the move. Now, the Telegraph reports that Cheney tried to block the deal before it happened:

Vice President Dick Cheney fought furiously to block efforts by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to strike a controversial US compromise deal with North Korea over the communist state’s nuclear programme, the Telegraph has learned.
“The exchanges between Cheney’s office and Rice’s people at State got very testy. But ultimately Condi had the President’s ear and persuaded him that his legacy would be stronger if they reached a deal with Pyongyang,” said a Pentagon adviser who was briefed on the battle.

On Friday, the New York Times described the North Korea deal as the State Department’s win in a “major battle against the Cheney camp.”

Toen zijn vader nog leefde, dronk de 54 jarige John Lowndes uit het Engelse Broad Haven iedere dag gezellig een kopje thee met zijn oude heer. Vandaar dat hij besloot dat de as van zijn vader niet in een urn thuishoorde maar in een theepot. Sterker nog: twee theepotten. John ging met de urn naar de plaatselijke pottenbakker Neil Richardson die de as van zijn gecremeerde vader verwerkte tot theepot, twee voor het geval er een ooit zou breken! John verklaarde dat zijn vader zijn daad zonder twijfel zou hebben goedgekeurd.
Het wachten is nu op het heengaan van moeder voor pottenbakker Richardson kan beginnen aan bijpassend servies.
Voor zichzelf opteert John voor asbak.

Polar scientists say that “for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.” The scientists “believe the chances of a totally ice-free North Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by huge wathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.”

During a recent off-the-record session with foreign policy experts, Dick Cheney was asked by Steve Clemons of The New America Foundation what he thought of the upcoming decision by the administration to “de-list North Korea from the terrorism blacklist.” The New York Times’ Helene Cooper reports:

Mr. Cheney froze, according to four participants at the Old Executive Office Building meeting…
[H]e stared, unsmilingly, at his questioner… Finally, he spoke:
“I’m not going to be the one to announce this decision,” the other participants recalled Mr. Cheney saying, pointing at himself. “You need to address your interest in this to the State Department.” He then declared that he was done taking questions, and left the room.

The Times characterizes the Bush administration’s North Korea decision as the State Department’s win in “a major battle against the Cheney camp.”

Trying To Appease John Bolton, Hannity Flip-Flops On North Korea Deal In 30 Seconds

FoxNews Sean Hannity goes in 30 sec’s from “a clear victory for Bush” to “being perplexed by Bush naivety”.

Yesterday, President Bush announced that his administration was taking North Korea off its list of state-sponsors of terror, as well as easing trade restrictions on them, in exchange for an open dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear program. This morning, North Korea destroyed a nuclear tower in “a gesture demonstrating its commitment” to the agreement’s terms.

On his Fox News show last night, right-wing pundit Sean Hannity originally hailed the agreement as “a clear foreign policy victory” for Bush. But Hannity’s guest John Bolton - a fierce advocate for war over negotiations - disagreed, arguing, “I think it’s actually a clear victory for North Korea.”

Hannity promptly attacked the agreement, reversing his position in less than 30 seconds. After first heralding Bush’s “clear victory,” Hannity concluded by declaring himself to be “perplexed” by Bush’s naivete:

HANNITY: The news today brings a clear foreign policy victory for the Bush administration. But will the press report it that way? Joining us now for analysis, former ambassador to the U.N. and a Fox News contributor, John Bolton. What do you think this means?
BOLTON: I think it’s actually a clear victory for North Korea. They gain enormous political legitimacy… In return, we get precious little. I think this is North Korea demonstrating again that they can out-negotiate the U.S. without raising a sweat.
HANNITY: Boy I tell you they’ve done it time and time again, and I’m sorta perplexed, Mr. Ambassador, to understand why we keep going back to the well knowing that they haven’t kept the agreements in the past. Whatever happened to Reagan’s “trust but verify”?

Last December, when the National Intelligence Estimate revealed that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons program, Hannity helped Bolton continue to beat the war drums by declaring that the report said nothing new, and that Iran was still as grave a threat.

UNDERSTANDING THE NETHERLANDS’ MARIHUANA POLICY.

* It’s policy is not ideology based, it’s reality based.
* The Dutch consider drug abuse a health problem not a criminal matter.
*Cannabis use is much higher in the US than in The Netherlands; use of hard drugs (cocaine, heroine) is much higher in the US than in The Netherlands; drugs related death is much higher in the US than in The Netherlands.

Cannabis is technically an illegal substance in the Netherlands, although you won’t get arrested for buying or smoking it in a coffee shop.
The Dutch have adopted a policy of “gedogen,” or blind eye, to its sale and use since 1976. The government distinguished between so-called “soft” cannabis drugs and “hard” drugs such as heroin or cocaine. That’s when coffee houses sprang up to sell and let people smoke.
In 1996, the Dutch government began to crack down on cannabis cafes. It now licenses them, bans them advertising their product, prohibits sales to anyone under 18, and limits sales and possession to 5 grams a day per person. Before, people could possess up to 30 grams. Since then, the number of shops in the country has fallen by about half — to 720 in the country. Last year, shops were forced to choose between serving alcohol and cannabis. Most chose cannabis. The sales aren’t subject to tax. However, owners pay taxes on the income they make from selling it.

‘DUTCH JIMMY CARTER’ ACCUSES ISRAEL OF TERRORISM IN NEW BOOK.

The emotion in Andreas Van Agt’s voice as he lambastes Israel’s behavior seems puzzling for a man of his status. It is especially intriguing when one is reminded that this blue-eyed professed idealist is an astute statesman who presided as the Dutch prime minister for five years, until 1982.
“My involvement in the Middle East is certainly unusual,” ‘Dries’ Van Agt confessed in an interview with Haaretz at his home in Nijmegen, where he discussed Israel, the Palestinians, European foreign policy, the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.
Currently, Van Agt is writing a book about the Israeli-Arab conflict. In December he launched an info-site (www.driesvanagt.nl) about the subject, in which he accuses Israel of brutal treatment of the Palestinians, violating international law and implementing racist policies.
“In my country, people are highly surprised by my demeanor. Some even say it should be ascribed to my advanced age; that I’m not fully in my right mind anymore,” the 77-year-old says with a snicker while sitting under the outdated portrait of the Queen, which hangs on the wall of his modern-style, taupe-colored den.

Dit is helemaal fout natuurlijk. Maar wel erg grappig om te zien. Hebt u erge honger en geen geld. U kunt altijd gratis eten bij een drive-in MacDonald. Het is werkelijk heel eenvoudig. Zo gaat dat.

JAMMER ER ZIT GEEN STUKJE IN.

De stukjesschrijver maakt iets mee op zijn wandeling door de stad. Wanneer beseft hij nou dat daar een stukje inzit? Dat wordt mij vaak gevraagd. Het antwoord moet onbevredigend zijn: het verschilt per gebeurtenis.
Ik liep over Realeneiland in Amsterdam. Ik naderde een kaderand en keek omhoog naar de toppen van een groepje dichtbebladerde bomen. Daar zat hij (of zij): een krijsende cyperse kat, zoals ik er zelf ook een had. Hij bevond zich op een stevige tak, zo’n drie meter boven de grond. Ik probeerde hem te kalmeren, maar hij liet me niet uitpraten en eiste op onverminderd luide toon onmiddellijke actie van mij.
Wat te doen? Ik had geen mobieltje bij me en belde aan bij het huis aan de overkant. Geen reactie. Ik liep hulpeloos terug naar de kat in de boom, maar die snauwde me woedend weg: sufferd, lul, ga die buurt in, roep, schreeuw, maak amok, doe wat!
Ik belde weer ergens aan. Toen hoorde ik, goddank, vlugge voeten op een trap en de voordeur zwaaide open. Een vrouw van middelbare leeftijd keek me aan.
Hier moet ik de handeling even stopzetten.
Wat zou nu goed zijn voor mijn stukje? Het helpt altijd als er meteen iets onverwachts gebeurt, maar het hoeft niet. Het kan ook voldoende zijn als die mevrouw mij nogal onaangenaam te woord staat.
Ze kan zeggen: “Wat zegt u? Dier in nood? Schei toch uit met dat sentimentele gezeur. Je lijkt wel zo’n derderangs stukjesschrijver die niks anders weet te verzinnen dan kleffe verhaaltjes over zijn katten.”
Kijk, in zo’n geval was mijn stukje al zo goed als rond geweest. Maar, helaas, dat zei die vrouw helemaal niet. Het was een vriendelijke, behulpzame vrouw. “Maakt u zich geen zorgen”, zei ze, “het is de kat van de buren. Als de buren straks thuiskomen, zal ik ze meteen waarschuwen.”
Ik bedankte haar omstandig en liep weg - niet langs die boom, maar via een omweg. Ik sloeg de hoek om en dacht met enige spijt: jammer, er zit geen stukje in.

Om te zeggen dat het Bush-presidentschap acht verloren jaren zijn is nog te veel eer. Amerika heeft niet stil gestaan onder president Bush, Amerika is achteruit gehold. Noord-Korea is daarvan een goed voorbeeld. Na zes jaar liet Bush eindelijk zijn arrogante, contraproductieve houding van niet onderhandelen met de vijand varen. En die zes jaar waren genoeg voor Noord-Korea om voldoende plutonium produceren voor (een paar) kerwapens. Nu acht jaar later is ook president Bush eindelijk op het diplomatieke pad beland dat door de briljante Clinton is uitgezet.

Flashback: As Governor, Bush Said, ‘Why Should I Care About North Korea?‘

Today, President Bush announced that North Korea has turned over a statement describing its nuclear program, prompting Bush to lift sanctions and rescind its designation as a state sponsor of terror. The news is a step “toward reintegration into the world community and rapprochement with the United States,” the New York Times observed.
But the developments come after seven wasted years by the Bush administration. In his book, State of Denial, Bob Woodward reported that in a conversation between then-Gov. George W. Bush and former Saudi ambassador Prince Bandar, Bush wondered why North Korea even mattered:

George W. pulled Bandar aside.
“Bandar, I guess you’re the best asshole who knows about the world. Explain to me one thing.”
“Governor, what is it?”
“Why should I care about North Korea?”
Bandar said he didn’t really know. It was one of the few countries that he did not work on for King Fahd.
“I get these briefings on all parts of the world,” Bush said, “and everybody is talking to me about North Korea.”

Through aggressive diplomacy, President Clinton reached the Agreed Framework in 1994, under which North Korea agreed to freeze nuclear production for the next eight years. In 2001, Secretary of State Colin Powell said the administration will “pick up where President Clinton left off.” But Bush objected to returning to Clinton’s diplomatic approach.

DE TWEE GRIEKSE VOLKEN IN OLYMPIA: STANDBEELDEN EN LEVENDEN.

Om de vier jaar begaven jonge mannen uit de steden van de Griekse oecumene zich op een lastige voetmars naar Olympia. Ze doorkruisten een beangstigend dor landschap, bereikten vervolgens na lange marsen een lieflijk dal en herademden. Voor hen lag het heiligdom van de eerste sport. Vijf dagen lang wijdden ze zich aan hun wedstrijden, in het aangezicht van de Zeus-tempel - voor een uitsluitend mannelijk publiek. Soms wisten vrouwen binnen te glippen, en een keer verkleedde de moeder van een atleet zich als man, om hem als illegale trainster bij te staan. Waarna de regel werd ingevoerd dat ook de trainers naakt moesten lopen.
Naakte mannen, vijf dagen lang ondergedompeld in een bovenaardse glans, van top tot teen ingeolied, volledig opgaand in hun krachtmetingen - de olie had geen wedstrijdtechnische betekenis, zoals dat soms bij het worstelen het geval was, het was een puur esthetisch element, want het was de bedoeling de lichamen van de atleten te laten stralen. Van doorslaggevend belang is hier de regel dat alleen de winnaar in de herinnering blijft voortleven: er is geen tweede en geen derde plaats. De winnaar kan er aanspraak op maken dat zijn standbeeld aan het einde van de allee van Olympia wordt geplaatst, wat in de loop der eeuwen tot gevolg had dat er bijna meer standbeelden waren dan Grieken.
Griekenland was een land dat door twee volken bewoond werd: door de standbeelden en de levenden.

De speciale verkiezingsstrategie van de Zanu-PF-partij van president Robert Mugabe is handen gevallen van de onafhankelijke website www.sokwanele.com. De verkiezingscampagne, die in april van dit jaar werd opgesteld, bestaat er uit supporters van Mugabe wapens te geven en die te gebruiken tegen leden van de oppositie. Dat schrijft de Zuidafrikaanse krant Beeld, ‘Jou wereld, Jou koerant’. Ook zouden parlementsleden van de oppositie moeten worden vermoord en alle bijeenkomsten van Tsvangirai partij moeten worden verstoord. Dat is gelukt.

Die webtuiste waarsku in ‘n spesiale boodskap aan sy lesers die meeste van die inligting wat sy bron tot dusver verskaf het, het waar geword. Die strategie is om wraak te sweer teen die loesing wat die MDC op 27 Maart aan Zanu-PF toegedien het.

Gaat dat tegenwoordig zo in Thailand?
Om een rechter om te kopen, laat je gewoon op goed geluk een zak met geld (40.000 euro) achter in de buurt van de rechtszaal. Advocaten van de afgezette premier Thaksin deden dat eerder deze maand in een poging de rechters gunstig te stemmen die het vonnis moesten vellen in de zaak over een (corrupte) landaankoop van Thaksin’s vrouw. Gezien de actie kunnen de haakjes om het woord corrupte dus wel weg.
Opmerkelijk was de directe reactie van mijn Thaise schoonmaakster: “Why didn’t they just take it?”
Daar is over nagedacht en de reden moet zijn dat het te riskant was. Geld in een papieren zak achtergelaten in de ‘compound’ van het Hooggerechtshof? Koortsachtig moet er zijn nagedacht. Van wie is het afkomstig en voor wie is het bestemd? Is het voor de Thaksin zaak of is het voor de zaak daarvoor dan wel die daarna? Kortom, er waren te veel vragen en daarom werd de vondst van het geld gemeld.
Het verweer van de drie advocaten bestond er overigens uit dat een broodzak vol brood per ongeluk was verwisseld met een broodzak vol geld. Ze zijn opgesloten.

THAILAND JAILES LAWYERS OF THAKSIN IN ‘MISTAKEN SNACKBOX CASE’.

Thailand’s Supreme Court jailed three lawyers of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Wednesday after an apparent attempt to bribe court officials with $60,000 (30,400 pounds) hidden in a paper grocery bag.
Pichit Chuenban and two associates representing Thaksin and his wife in a pending land-deal case were responsible for the 2 million baht left in the bag at the Supreme Court compound earlier this month, the court ruled.
The bag was found on the day that Thaksin, ousted in a coup in 2006, and his wife were due to appear on charges of violating graft laws that prevent serving politicians and their spouses from striking deals with state agencies.

Bush’s approval hits new low: 23 percent.

Only 23 percent of Americans said they approve of President Bush’s job performance in a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg survey, which is a new low for him in that poll. Seventy-three percent of respondents said they disapproved of the job Bush is doing.

McClellan: Cheney’s memoir could be called, ‘I Upped Halliburton’s Income - So Up Yours’.

In a speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco last night, former White House press secretary Scott McClellan offered cutting criticism of Vice President Dick Cheney, saying he “had a terribly negative influence over this president.” At one point, McClellan suggested “some ideas for book titles Cheney might consider“:

McClellan who is clear that he has no great admiration for Cheney, joked to the audience that his national book tour has given him some ideas for book titles Cheney might consider: “The Lies I Told,” or “I Upped Halliburton’s Income - So Up Yours.”

McClellan also offered potential book title ideas for Karl Rove and Scooter Libby: “The Lies I Told to Whom and Why” and “Well, Pardon Me,” respectively.

Het gaat de goede kant op in Belgie. Nu mogen alleen nog mensen die echt Nederlands spreken in Vilvoorde een huis kopen. En nog strengere maatregelen zijn in voorbereiding. Straks zullen Vilvoorders die het Nederlands niet machtig zijn, worden geweigerd in bus of trein. En ook aparte toiletten, vergeef me, aparte wc’s - komt uit het Engels maar dat mag dan weer wel he - voor Frans en Nederlands sprekenden zijn in aankomst. Verder zijn echte Vilvoorders hard aan het oefenen op de uitspraak van het woord ‘Scheveningen’. Een in Nederland in WW II beproefd middel om buitenlandse infiltranten op te sporen.
Het voorbeeld van Vilvoorde verspreid zich overigens als een olievlek. Het geldt nu ook in Zaventem en Londerzeel, allemaal gemeenten rond Westerbork Brussel. En in Geraardsbergen worden taalvoorwaarden gekoppeld aan het verkrijgen van een leefloon (nl: bijstand).
In Nederland wordt de ontwikkeling in Belgie op de voet gevolgd.
Zo is er een voorstel in voorbereiding om alleen nog mensen toestemming te geven een huis te kopen in de Amsterdamse Slotervaart die het Marokkaans machtig zijn. Een verdere voorwaarde is, zo stelt de plaatselijke imam voor, dat de toekomstige huiseigenaar gedurende tenminste twintig seconden het woord ‘hoer’ op een geluidsniveau van tenminste 20 decibel ten gehore kan brengen.

‘APARTHEID’ ENTERS BELGIAN POLITICS: ONLY DUTCH SPEAKING BELGIANS ARE ALLOWED TO BUY A HOUSE IN VILVORDE IN FLANDERS.

The Belgian town of Vilvorde has taken the kingdom’s linguistic row to new extremes by insisting that only Dutch speakers be allowed to buy homes it has up for sale. Buyers have to prove they can speak Dutch, and not just show their “willingness” to learn the regional language, as is the case elsewhere in Flanders when renting publicly owned homes.
For an application to be taken into account, a prospective home owner would have to provide a copy of a school certificate showing that they had studied Dutch, or passed a language test.
The French-speaking Socialist party disagreed.
