De aanschafprijs was 127,5 miljoen euro, de verkoop leverde 59 miloen euro op. Dus inderdaad de Nederlandsetopspelers - Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder, Royston Drenthe, Arjen Robben, Rafael van der Vaart en Klaas Jan Huntelaar -hebben Real Madrid (los van salaris en bonussen) 68.5 miljoen euro gekost. Maar dan wordt wel vergeten wat Real Madrid in die tijd allemaal heeft gewonnen. Nou dan.
Graag verwijs ik even naar dit artikel op drasties in 2007 over de aankopen van Bernd Schuster die toen trainer was van Real Madrid.

Naar Nederland komen de meeste buitenlanders (60 pct) dan ook niet voor het geld maar vooral voor het mooie weer. Naar Saudi-Arabië gaan negen van de tien expats puur voor het geld. De resterende één op de tien zit er voor de mooie vrouwen.

Ik ben Yassmine El Ksaihi, 24 jaar en voorzitter van de Poldermoskee. Zo ben ik ook in aanraking gekomen met Timu Kota en de geweldige mensen achter de stichting. Dit is wel iets. Twee vliegtuigpassagiers - Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al-Soofi en Hezem al-Murisi - zijn op Schiphol gearresteerd met in hun bagage een lege shampo-fles waaraan horloges waren bevestigd en een lege medicijnfles waaraan mobiele telefoons waren bevestigd. Het lijkt daarmee op een oefening voor een bomaanslag. In flessen kan explosieve vloeistof worden vervoerd en horloges en mobiele telefoons kunnen worden gebruikt bij het exploderen van een bom. Ook zouden er messen en scharen in de koffers hebben gezeten.

23-8-2010 - Ik ben al weer twee dagen onderweg en geniet van de rust en ruimte om mij heen.Momenteel een goede wind na een dag weinig wind,dus motor erbij.Door het rollen van Guppy een beetje last van zeeziekte gehad.Maar dat gaat nu gelukkig weer beter. Ik ben al over de helft van mijn eerste etappe. Het gaat lekker…
Landen die hun zaakjes goed voor elkaar hebben - dus waar de mensen hard werken, zich redelijk houden aan de regels en waar zorg wordt gedragen voor de zwakkeren - zijn opmerkelijk populair bij mensen die er in hun eigen landen consequent een puinhoop van maken. Als bepaalde rijke landen immigratie onbeperkt zouden toestaan, zou de bevolking binnen een jaar verveelvoudigen.
Populairst: Singapore, Nieuw Zeeland en Saoedi-Arabië. Zie de hele lijst hieronder. Nederland (+17%) zou er direct zo’n drie miljoen mensen bijkrijgen, mochten de grenzen helemaal open gaan.
Uiteraard staan landen met een overwegend zwarte bevolking en idem dito bestuur onderaan. Voor alle duidelijkheid. Dat komt allemaal door het koloniale tijdperk. Maar is er een Afrikaans land waar de mensen naar toe willen, vraagt u zich natuurlijk ook af.
Ja! Zuid-Afrika (+13) en een ander land waar de Boeren tot voor kort de baas speelden, Namibië (+2), en Zambia (+5).

Laura Dekker gaat van start. En ze is er helemaal klaar voor. Zie het laatste nieuws van Laura’s blog: “De was gedraait, we hadden 3 wasmachines vol! … Het weer is prachtig hier en ik ben maar even van mijn bontjas afgestapt, die had ik de hele weg naar portugal wel aan want toen was het niet zo warm.”
12-8-2010 - Hallo iedereen het gaat echt geweldig we varen vol zeil en halen bijna 9 knoop we varen al halverwege Portugal bij Figueira da Foz.
En ja ik moet het weer over mijn vader hebben nu heeft hij zijn teen gebroken hij slaapt nu maar het doet behoorlijk pijn. Je kan hem ook nooit alleen laten! maar ik verzorg hem goed hoor haha straks ga ik weer lekker koken.
Ik hoor van Peter wat er in Nederland allemaal gebeurd dat zijn veel nieuwe dingen gaaf om te horen. Ook zie ik steeds vaker dofijnen echt super vet om te zien en het water is hier zo mooi blauw.
De koers die we varen is zuid 181 graden, afstand afgelegd nu 704 mijl mooi weer en lekker windje.
Hoe dit gerecht smaakt, geen idee. Maar de naam is in ieder geval uitmuntend: 1881 Coffee Cafe’s Dutch Apple Walnut Loaf. Wat het betekent? We slaan er een slag naar. Een appeltaart, gevuld met walnoten, die in 1881 voor het eerst door Nederlandse emigranten in de Verenigde Staten is gebakken en bij de koffie wordt geserveerd.
We were smitten with this loaf even before it came out of the oven, the scents of cinnamon and apple perfuming the kitchen as it baked. Cooled, the wonderfully crumbly topping revealed a light and fluffy loaf, almost cake-like in texture. It’s only slightly sweet with a gentle tang from buttermilk, and with little chunks of apple and walnut suspended throughout. Paired with a good cup of coffee, it makes a perfect start to the day.

Until a few days ago, I was writer-in-residence in Amsterdam for the Dutch Foundation of Literature and gorging on the incredible feast of Dutch non-fiction about the contemporary world. And yes, I mean world: There is something about the way the Dutch approach current politics that is daring, thoughtful, open-minded and critical, yet completely non-judgmental.
Maybe another way of putting that is that Dutch non-fiction writers are tough-minded but not cynical, and their work has been knocking my socks off. You feel they are opening the world to you as it is, not as you want it to be, and their insights are both shocking and life-giving. Their astonishing books make me want to stop writing novels and return to journalism, where I started out. [read on](more…)

The Economic Times - A Gallup World Poll survey has found that The Netherlands is the happiest country in the world. Gallup surveyed thousands of respondents in 155 countries, between 2005 and 2009, in order to measure two types of well-being. The researchers first asked subjects to reflect on their overall satisfaction with their lives, and ranked their answers using a ‘life evaluation’ score from one to ten. They later asked questions about how each subject had felt the previous day. Vandaag, near the northeast corner of Second Avenue and Sixth Street in the East Village, will be the first when it has its soft opening on Tuesday.
Genevers (also spelled jenever) are often aged. They are typically headier, more malty and sweeter than London dry style gins. At Vandaag, the genevers will be served chilled and in the traditional tulip-shaped glasses found in Amsterdam’s genever bars. In 2006 the Netherlands implemented a universal insurance mandate. American policymakers are looking to the Dutch experiment as a model to fix America’s complex and costly health care system. But the Dutch reforms have not caused individual consumers to seek value, and the “managed competition” has led to a less competitive market. After just three years, the Dutch insurance market is a clear-cut oligopoly. Given the narrow, partisan enactment of President Obama’s health policy agenda, America appears to be on a similar path. Two health policy analysts, including one from Holland, explain why patients in the Netherlands do not have a significant choice among health insurance companies, nor can they access sufficient information about the health system and different options - and why this system would not benefit patients in America, either.

Los Angeles Times - Who knew the vice president of the United States was such a big soccer fan?
Or at least a fan of Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and the rest of the Dutch team? Landing in Baghdad on Saturday to visit U.S. troops and talk with Iraqi leaders, Joe Biden told reporters “we hope the Netherlands wins the World Cup.”
Who the “we” was is unknown. Presumably it was not Americans of Spanish, Uruguayan or German descent, but perhaps Biden simply likes the way the Dutch play and favors them over the other three World Cup semifinalists.
Or maybe, as the Associated Press put it, it was because he was about to meet “chief U.S. diplomat, top American military commander and the U.S. envoy to Iraq, Ad Melkert, who is Dutch.”
Good thing Melkert isn’t Argentine. Who knows what Biden would have said then.
Verslaggever Tom Mctague van The Mirror ging Oranje supporteren tijdens Nederland - Slowakije. Nederlanders zijn namelijk net Engelsen, aldus Tom, alleen kunnen ze beter voetballen. Hij bekeek de wedstrijd in De Hems Dutch Bar in Soho, Central London. Het leek precies op een Engelse pub… stampvol met bierdrinkende mensen. Maar dan wel zonder de constante dreiging van geweld in de lucht en zonder het voortdurende braken van dronken supporters. Zaken die gebruikelijk zijn bij voetbal in een Engelse pub. Oftewel, het was bijna beschaafd.
“Hup, Holland, Hup!” Or to you and me: “Go, Holland, Go.”
England are out of the World Cup but we can’t let the rest of this tournament carry on without supporting someone. So who better than our footballmad neighbours in the Netherlands? They speak better English than us, love a pint of beer or four and have a record of under-performing at the World Cup.

The Dutch government is supplying six sweeping arm systems for the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The technology involves a skimmer that scoops up oil and water and then separates the two.
The technology, called the sweeping arm system, was developed by the Dutch in the early 1970s and has been used to successfully combat oil spills – including high-profile disasters involving the Sea Empress, off the coast of Wales, in 1996; and the Prestige, off the coast of Spain, in 2002. read on>> (more…)

Zouden er echt mensen zijn die op vakantie naar Nederland gaan om daar op een kale vlakte een paar uur door de bagger te zwoegen. Om helemaal niets te zien? Trekt dat mensen? Niks, nada, noppes, niente..

We zoom past verdant pastures full of cows and sheep, past centuries-old churches, and past windmills, both old and modern. I notice the blades on the newer machines are spinning fast. That’s a bad sign: more wind means more water. That is, more water in the Wadden Sea, a thin and shallow stretch of the North Sea that separates the Dutch mainland from a series of islands, including Ameland, a narrow slip of pristine land that’s home to four villages.
My wife and I have gotten up before dawn this late August morning to walk from the coast to Ameland — through lots of mud and water. This soggy eight-and-a-half-mile trek has to be timed just right with the tides, but windy conditions can cause the water level to be too high and unsafe for an on-foot crossing. Dutch Treat of Going Dutch blijkt echter helemaal geen Nederlands ding te zijn. Het is meer iets van de buren! Zo heet het in andere landen.
In some parts of Italy (especially the south), the expression pagare alla romana can be translated as: “To pay like people of Rome” or “to pay like they do in Rome”. It has the same meaning as “going Dutch”. This can lead to misunderstanding, because in other parts of Italy pagare alla romana means to divide equally the total cost between all the commensals.
The corresponding phrase in Turkish is hesabı Alman usulü ödemek, which can be translated into English as “to pay the bill the German way”. Alman usûlü = German style
