Lang geleden was JdeW voor het eerst in Vietnam om er wat stukjes over te schrijven. De persdienst in Hanoi had mij daarbij een gids toegewezen die iedere stap op de voet volgde. Uiteraard opdat ik geen, in de ogen van de Vietnamese autoriteiten, stoute dingen zou doen. Het toeval wil dat deze begeleider een heel erg mooie, jonge vrouw was. De oudere gidsen kenden eigenlijk alleen maar Russisch, vandaar. U begrijpt… het kon JdeW niet stout genoeg zijn.
Haar standaard reactie op vrijwel al mijn voorstellen was: ‘oh what a pity’.
“Oh wat a pity, daar kunt u vandaag niet heen.”
“Oh what a pity, de minister is niet beschikbaar.”
“Oh what a pity, daar mag u niet aankomen.”
Ik zie haar nog voor me, ze reikte net tot mijn schouder. Tanh was haar naam. Ze was altijd uitgedost in een spijkerbroek en een Amerikaanse baseballpet. De centrale bank: spijkerbroek; mausoleum van Ho Chi Minh: baseballpet.
Op een avond vroeg ik wat haar naam betekende.
Tanh: “Die naam heeft mijn vader mij gegeven toen ik nog in mijn moeders buik zat. Het was op het einde van de oorlog en hij was dokter aan het front. Tanh betekent ‘Overwinning’. Oh what a pity… mijn vader heeft nooit Tanh mogen zien.”
Vroeger waren er geen fastfood restaurants inAzië enook geen dikke mensen. Sinds een jaar of vijftien rukken de McDonald’s en KFC’s onstuitbaar op. In een stad als Bangkok kom je ze nu op bijna iedere straathoek tegen. En hun slachtoffers… veel te dikke Thais. Gaat Vietnam ook die kant op?

De Indiase politie heeft een Pakistaanse spion gearresteerd. Op het lijf van de spion waren met rode inkt een Pakistaans adres en een telnummer geschreven.
Tijdens de ondervraging gaf de spion alles toe met een aanhoudend roekoeroekoe. Het betreft namelijk een duif. Volgens de Indiase politie geen gewone duif maar een postduif. Het dier werd gevangen in de betwistte provincie Punjab. India neemt het zekere voor het onzekere en laat de duif bewaken. Ondanks protesten van Amnesty International mag de vogel geen bezoek ontvangen. Advocaat Bram Moskowicz heeft al laten weten het te druk te hebben met Eva Jinek.
Pakistan Daily - Indian police are holding a pigeon under armed guard after it was caught on an alleged spying mission for arch rivals Pakistan. The white bird was found in India’s Punjab state, which borders Pakistan, and taken to a police station. JdeW heeft palmen, bananenbomen, diverse hem onbekende (vrucht)bomen, veel gras met bloemetjes, een klein vijvertje met visjes en donderkopjes die als kikker het liefst in JdeW zijn gympies kruipen. Verder veel vogels waaronder ringmusjes die zo brutaal zijn geworden dat als we de ramen open doen, ze niet om ons huis heen vliegen maar er door heen.

JdeW’s kinderen gaan naar een internationale school. Dus ik ken ze een beetje, die kinderen uit Azië. De uitkomst van onderstaand onderzoek - Koreaanse kinderen niet gelukkig - verbaast me dan ook niets. Ik zie dagelijks de strakke koppies van de speelkameraadjes van mijn kinderen. Wat die allemaal niet van school en ouders moeten doen. Vanaf hun zesde krijgen kinderen hier al minstens een uur huiswerk per dag mee van school. Minstens! Schoorvoetend doen wij daarin mee. Aangezien veel kinderen ook nog eens ruim een uur naar school moeten reizen, zijn ze gedurende de week dus vrijwel alleen met school bezig. En in het weekeinde krijgen Koreaanse, Japanse en Chinese kinderen stuk voor stuk bijles in hun eigen taal, sommige ook nog eens bijscholing in een zwak vak en verder allemaal piano-, dans-, zang- en/of acteerlessen. Ik doe dat allemaal niet of nauwelijks.
Op onze internationale school kun je korting krijgen als je academisch uitblinkt. Wij hebben die korting niet. Mijn kinderen kennen het systeem van Mendelejeff nog niet uit hun hoofd. Ook konden ze op hun zesde geen pianosonate van Mozart ten gehore brengen. Toch hebben ze korting gekregen. En wel omdat ze uitzonderlijk vrolijk zijn en sociaal uitblinken.
Zo werd deze week het geld van de juf van Bo gestolen. Mijn oudste dochter organiseerde direct een inzameling bij haar klasgenootjes. De opbrengst hield niet over. Mogelijk omdat er zoveel Chinezen in haar klas zitten. En de juf van de jongste zei toen ze ziek was. “I miss her. Bibi makes me laugh every day. She is so stinking funny!”
Dat telt ook, meent JdeW.

Don’t clog up our feng shui, property giant says. One of Hong Kong’s biggest property companies has given a Dutch consulate’s exhibition of clogs the boot - because it says the wooden footwear is bad for feng or fung shui….
The Cheung Kong Center said the wooden shoes show would cause bad luck, because the Cantonese word for shoes — hai — sounds similar to a sigh of exasperation, the English-language paper said.
“Cheung Kong Center rejected the exhibition because of the Chinese meaning of wooden shoes. I don’t understand. It is difficult to explain as I don’t know how to say shoes in Chinese,” an unnamed member of the consulate told the South China Morning Post.
The exhibition, part of an effort to promote Dutch culture, which will raise money for Chinese children, is now being held at another tower in Hong Kong, the paper said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The husband and son of murdered Kelantan woman A. Fairos Ahmad Sulaiman are believed to be living in a small town called Benthuizen in Holland.
Information received by lawyers for Fairos’ family revealed that her Dutch husband Lambertus Den Dulk also known as Mohd Lufti Abdullah and their 3-year-old son, Johan Sebastian, have been living in the town since they returned from Thailand.
Lawyer Noraishah Shamsuddin said the father and son were spotted in the town of 3,000 people.

Iemand die wel eens Bombay, nu Mumbai geheten, is binnengevlogen zal het zijn opgevallen. Ook als je Mumbai met de auto benadert valt het op. Er is niets van de stad te zien; het enige dat je ziet, is een grote grijze bruine wolk. Dat is de viezigheid waarin de inwoners van Mumbai leven. Het is de wolk waarin ook de bewoners van Djakarta, Manilla, Bangkok en andere grote steden in Zuid-Azië hun leven doorbrengen. En diezelfde bruine wolk hangt eigenlijk over heel Zuid-Azië. Waaruit die wolk precies bestaat was nooit duidelijk, maar nu is het uitgezocht.

South Asia has a cloud over its head — an unpleasant, unhealthy and climate-affecting soup of sooty haze that envelops the region, particularly in winter. Scientists have studied what’s called the “brown cloud” for years, yet there has always been uncertainty about it. How much of the soot and other carbon-containing aerosols that make up the haze comes from the burning of fossil fuels in cars, power plants and the like, and how much comes from burning wood and other biomass for cooking and agriculture?

De net afgestudeerde Adilah is als eerste uit Maleisië uitgekozen voor een stage van een halfjaar bij het Internationaal Strafhof in Den Haag. De twintigjarige rechtenstudente uit Kuala Lumpur noemt het een buitengewone kans voor ‘iemand met mijn status’. De ‘ambitieuze jonge vrouw’ werd financieel gesteund door familie en school. Verder gaf ze les en deed ze vertaalwerk online. De tickets werden geschonken door een anonieme donor.

De blogger Nay Phone Latt is gisteren in Myanmar veroordeeld tot twintig jaar, voor de publicatie van een cartoon op zijn blog. Mogelijk deze? Ook journalisten die maar enigszins kritisch zijn over het regime zijn opgepakt en opgesloten in de Insein gevangenis. En zelfs de advocaten die deze blogger en andere critici hebben verdedigd, zijn veroordeeld tot gevangenisstraffen.
A young Burmese blogger who was a major source of information for the outside world on the brutal regime crackdown on the September 2007 uprising was sentenced to 20 years and six months imprisonment on Monday.
Nay Phone Latt, 28, was sentenced by a court in Rangoon’s Insein Prison, according to his mother, Aye Than. He was convicted of contravening Public Offense Act 505 B by posting a cartoon depicting junta leader Snr-Gen Than Shwe on his blog site.

De Indonesische regering gaat de in Nederland gevestigde failliette Indover bank - exact geheten: N.V. de Indonesische Overzeese Bank - voor de rechter slepen. Opvallend detail daarbij is dat de Indover bank geheel eigendom is van de Indonesische centrale bank. Dat is dus bijna zoiets als jezelf voor de rechter slepen. Oftewel ze hebben het maar druk in de ‘Gordel van Smaragd’.
En direct rijst de vraag. Krijgt Nederland de schuld? Nou het begin is er, niet in dit verhaal in de Jakarta Post. Maar wel in het verhaal hieronder van correspondent Aglionby in de Financial Times. Daar wordt tot aller jolijt vermeld dat de Indover bank werd geërfd van ”the country’s former Dutch colonial masters’. Oftewel, mensen niet klagen, deze puinzooi werd geërfd van de Kaaskoppen. Heel goed, zo zien we het graag.

Het lijkt verstandig voorlopig even uit de buurt te blijven van Bali en grote Westerse hotels in heel Indonesië. Dat omdat executie van de Bali-bommers aanstaande is. Australië heeft een negatief reisadvies gegeven voor Indonesië. En ook Nieuw Zeeland heeft buitenlanders aangeraden uit de buurt te blijven van toeristische oorden.
De vraag is natuurlijk wel voor hoe lang. Te verwachten valt dat de planning om Islamitische helden naar hun 72 maagden ergens daar boven te sturen - Hubble blijft zoeken mensen -, en Westerlingen naar de hel beneden, pas begint na de werkelijke executie. Volgens een Indonesische legende heeft zes eeuwen geleden een prinses haar jongste kind in de vulkaan gegooid om de berggoden tevreden te stemmen. Hiep Hiep Hoera. Om dat heugelijke feit te vieren, komen ook nu nog ieder jaar duizenden pelgrims naar de vulkaan Mount Bromo. Vandaag was het weer zover, schrijft de Jakarta Post.
Toch fijn dat er een God is.
Altijd als ik in een buitenlandse krant kijk, zoals in dit geval naar aanleiding van de aanstaande executie van de Bali-bommers, kijk ik of er een andere opvallende lokale gebeurtenis beschreven wordt. En er is altijd wel wat.

‘We have decided to support any measure necessary to save the economy, as long as it complies with regulations,’ deputy head of the parliamentary commission on finance and banking Endin Soefihara told The Straits Times.
Amsterdam-based Indover is the first Indonesian bank to fall victim to the global financial turmoil.
De Iraans Amerikaanse schrijfster van onderstaand stuk in Payvand’s Iran News, Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich, weet waarom Nederland Iraanse studenten weert van bepaalde universiteiten. Uit schaamte en schuldgevoel. Volgens haar dwingen geesten uit het verleden ons om de jodenster op de revers van Iraniërs te spelden.
Na het lezen van haar stuk, moest me dit van het hart. Van harte welkom studenten uit Iran, van harte.
Gewoonlijk houdt studente Soraya uit Los Angeles zich bezig met de Amerikaanse politiek ten opzichte van Iran. Maar nu mag ook Nederland even van haar aandacht genieten. Soraya heeft vrij simpele verklaringen voor alles. En in die verklaringen duiken vrijwel altijd de joden en Israel, en de CIA en Amerika op. Zo komt de plotselinge (?) Amerikaanse aandacht voor Tibet omdat daar uranium in de bodem zit. En in dit stuk over Nederland vliegen de joden en de nazi’s je weer om de oren. Geen pretje om te lezen dus, maar even doorbijten.
Overigens, wilt u ook politiek analist worden, zo moet het dus. Je begint ieder stukje met een provocerende stelling, staaft die met wat historische humbug, werkt naar het einde toe met een quote van een bekende ouwe lul (Friedrich Nietzsche, George Washington, Desmond Tutu, Homi J.
