Sorry Dominique. (Superior Bastard)
*Kennis, kennis, kennis, kennis, kennis, kennis, kennis Rutger. Alleen dat gaat je redden. (Denkt Na)
No restraining order in Australia for Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries
A Perth man has failed to have a restraining order slapped on high-profile Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries and his TV crew. Daniel Ian Ross appeared in Perth Magistrates Court yesterday to apply for a violence restraining order on Dutch TV crime reporter Peter R. de Vries and two of his colleagues. He failed.
The Sydney Morning Herald - Mr Ross claimed he had been harassed by the Dutch crew when they tried to talk to him at his home in the inner-city suburb of Subiaco last month.
Mr de Vries, 53, and Chantal van Schuylenburgh, 43, were arrested for disobeying a police move-on order, after trying to question Mr Ross about the violent death of a Dutch woman in Honduras in 2008. [read on](more…)
This weekend Glenn Beck had Rabbi Daniel Lapin on his show on Fox News. Maybe someone should point out to Glenn Beck’s guest that, even though it may feel good to condemn all atheists as “parasites” in a “moral society,” it is profoundly irresponsible to do s0. Particularly for a man of God. After all, there is an important historical precedent for what happens when you single out an entire sector of the populace as a “parasitical element.” [read on] (more…)
The withdrawal of 100,000 troops from Iraq since Obama’s inauguration is significant, and it’s a good thing that the President adhered to the withdrawal schedule. But 50,000 troops remaining is a huge number. It’s what Donald Rumsfeld originally envisioned as the occupying force to be used three months after the invasion — and it’s inevitable that in the future Americans will still fight and die in Iraq.Glenn Greenwald:
On August 18, NBC News anchor Brian Williams began his broadcast by excitedly declaring: ”It’s gone on longer than the Civil War, longer than World War II. And tonight, U.S. combat troops have pulled out of Iraq.” He immediately called in Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel, who was exclusively embedded with the 4th Stryker Brigade. Engel excitedly announced that “the last American combat troops rolled” into Kuwait just moments ago. [read on](more…)
Last night, Fox News televangelist Glenn Beck railed on universities, declaring that “we have been setting up re-education camps. We call them universities.” Beck also explained that “our children are being submerged in the filth of communism” at schools around the country.
“Let me ask you, there was a time not long ago in this country we walked you through walls of fire to make sure we weren’t funding Hamas or Hezbollah. I have news for you. There are a lot of universities that are as dangerous with the indoctrination of the children as terrorists are in Iran or North Korea.”
We’ll be fact-checking Glenn Beck and others who speak at his “Restoring Honor” rally at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday. We hope to publish those items in the next few days.
In the meantime, we thought it would be timely to look at Beck’s record on the Truth-O-Meter. As you can see from the running tally in his PolitiFact file, we’ve rated 17 statements by the Fox News talk show host. It’s fair to say that record skews toward the False end of the Truth-O-Meter.
His record (as of Aug. 27, 2010):
True 1
Mostly True 1
Half True 3
Barely True 4
False 5
Pants on Fire 3
Crowd counting isn’t an exact science. Still, we like to know how many honorable American patriots came to the ‘Restoring Honor’ rally organised by Fox News host Glenn Beck. Experts from CBS said the rally this weekend in Washington drew about 87,000 people.
The great man himself Glenn Beck said there were somewhere between 300,000 and 600,000 white folks and 17 blacks.
The Republican politician Michele Bachmann claimed there were more than a million people.
So who is right? Again, it’s not an exact science, but a very good guess can be made based on the available evidence. Let’s start with a look at the three images of the rally: [read on](more…)
The Washington Post’s media critic Howard Kurtz today uses his Post column to send a gushing love letter to Time Magazine and its executives. Entitled “Thinner Time magazine still manages to stand out,” it reads like a Time Warner Press Release heaping praise on its magazine for great success. The first sentence crowns Time Editor-in-Chief Rick Stengel as “the last man standing,” trumpets Time’s success in comparison to the struggles of Newsweek and U.S. News, and claims — most hilariously of all — that “Time has done it mainly with serious journalism.” [read on](more…)
In fact if you follow Fox News and the Limbaugh/Hannity afternoon radio crew, this summer’s blowout has almost seemed like an intentional echo of the notorious Radio Rwanda broadcasts “warning” Hutus that they were about to be attacked and killed by conspiring Tutsis, broadcasts that led to massacres of Tutsis by Hutus acting in “self-defense.” A sample of some of the stuff we’ve seen and heard on the air this year.
Frank Rich, NYT - There’s just one element missing from America’s ostensibly spontaneous and leaderless populist uprising: the sugar daddies who are bankrolling it, and have been doing so since well before the “death panel” warm-up acts of last summer. Three heavy hitters rule. You’ve heard of one of them, Rupert Murdoch. The other two, the brothers David and Charles Koch, are even richer, with a combined wealth exceeded only by that of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett among Americans. But even those carrying the Kochs’ banner may not know who these brothers are.
Crooks and Liars - Fox News host Glenn Beck promised there wouldn’t “be a dry eye in the house” after his big speech today at the Lincoln Memorial.
Riiiiight. Well, Glenn Beck’s eyes certainly weren’t dry. He started weeping while telling the crowd that somewhere out there was “the next George Washington”.
Dunno about you, but when I saw pan shots of the crowd — which was one of the whitest crowds in D.C. in recent memory — I mostly thought I saw “the next Timothy McVeigh.” But your mileage may vary. [read on](more…)
I have a scheme. Jon Stewart dismantles the fear, the loathing, and the crass commercialism of Fox News host, Glenn Beck. Beck says that “whites don’t own Abraham Lincoln” and that “blacks don’t own Martin Luther King.”
To which Jon Stewart ads: America doesn’t own Glenn Beck. Goldline does.
Bob Herbert - America is better than Glenn Beck. For all of his celebrity, Mr. Beck is an ignorant, divisive, pathetic figure. On the anniversary of the great 1963 March on Washington he will stand in the shadows of giants — Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Who do you think is more representative of this nation? Charles Blow - The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was already dead when I was born, and yet I idolized him the way most children idolized athletes and pop stars. I had the poster and the T-shirt, I knew the speeches and the places he’d marched.
He was smart and brave, steadfast and unmovable. He was a man consumed by conviction and possessed by the magnificent radiance of the earnestly humble. He was an eloquent speaker and a beautiful writer. He cared more about justice and equality than fame or fortune. He was a beacon of light in a world beset by darkness.
That’s why the nightmarish idea of Glenn Beck (who has called President Obama a racist and compared Obama’s America to “The Planet of the Apes”) holding a “Restoring Honor” rally on the 47th anniversary of — and on the same site as — King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, so incensed me.
Is it starting? The slide downwards for South Africa many people expect to happen under the new president Jacob Zuma? Towards were almost all other countries in Africa are? A corrupt government that tries to protect its business deals - with mainly constitutes of stealing from it’s people - by stifling the press?
Boston. Globe - South African President Jacob Zuma, just a month removed from soccer’s glitz, is threatening to return to grimmer days by clamping down on news organizations that criticize his government. This misguided effort threatens the foundations of the new South Africa, which up to now has set an inspiring example for all young democracies. Embarrassed by media coverage of scandals in Zuma’s family and of profiteering by public officials even as millions struggle in poverty, the government has proposed a “Protection of Information Bill.’’ His party, the African National Congress, is calling for tribunals to regulate the media. Earlier this month, a journalist was arrested after reporting that the national police commissioner may have may questionable business dealings.
Under the bill, the government could define so-called “sensitive information’’ as anything deemed in “the national interest.’’ It has aroused vigorous opposition, and not only from media organizations. Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu last week spoke out against the measures as “something that virtually everybody rejects.’’

American Sen. Al Franken says there is a growing free speech problem in the US:
Sen. Al Franken (D.-Minn.) warned a packed house Thursday night in Minneapolis that the corporate takeover of our media, and the government’s failure to stop it, is one of the most important issues of our time.
Franken said our media system is at risk everywhere we turn — from our free speech online to the growing power of companies who own a massive number of media outlets.
Hannibal ad portas ‘ The ideas put forward by men like Glenn Beck are not “just like fascism,” they simply are fascism’
DailyKos - There is a clash of civilizations going on, and it has nothing to do with the Burlington Coat Factory Community Center. It’s more fundamental than Christian vs. Muslim. It’s reason vs. fear. Civilization vs. anarchy.
That clash is happening right here in America.
Don’t misunderstand me. I don’t believe that being a conservative equates with being evil. Over the course of our nation’s history, many conservative figures have raised questions deserving of an answer. They framed their issues with ideas that were testable. They contributed to the national conversation in a meaningful, beneficial way. They acted not just out of raw self-interest, but with sincere desire to do what they believed best for our nation and its people. [read on](more…)
Laura Dekker gaat van start. En ze is er helemaal klaar voor. Zie het laatste nieuws van Laura’s blog: “De was gedraait, we hadden 3 wasmachines vol! …
In a dramatic interview with CNN’s Larry King, radio personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger - drasties: Wanna hear an American radiohost use the word ‘nigger’ 11 times? - announced that she will be ending her radioshow at the end of the year. Schlessinger steps down amidst intensive criticism over her racially-charged rant live on radio last week. She said she will not be renewing her contract in order to “regain” her “First Amendment rights.”
News Corp. (Fox News) donated $1 million to the Republican Governors’ Association in order for this group to mount high-profile attack campaigns on Democratic candidates. Cenk Uygur (Young Turks) took a whack at them while filling in for Ed Schultz on MSNBC this week.
Uygur: Fox News came out of the closet today. Everyone with two bits of sense always knew they were a Republican propaganda machine, but today they made it official. Bloomberg News reported that News Corp, the parent company of Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post donated $1 million to the Republicans Governors Association.
It isn’t a complete surprise that Fox News is playing politics. But still it is surprising that News Corp. donated $1 million to the Republican Governors’ Association, so it can mount a high-profile attack campaigns against Democratic candidates. I think it’s safe for everyone to eliminate the terms “fair” and “balanced” from any discussion of Fox News. [read on](more…)
‘Hairdresser goes blind in salon…after combing unknown woman’s hair’
Hekserij? Paranormaal begaafd?
Peace FM Online - A middle aged woman came to a popular hairdressing salon located in Kumasi to fix a weave-on. Barely 20 minutes after an apprentice had started on the hair, an excruciating shout was heard from the young girl. She told her colleagues that a thick smoke had entered her eyes from the woman’s hair and that she could not see clearly.
Adjacent to the shop is a prayer camp so the pastor was implored to come over to pray for the girl. After several minutes of fervent prayers the sight was partially restored. Shockingly, the middle aged woman never ever uttered a word when the girl was going through her ordeal. Before anybody could say jack, she was nowhere to be found.
TVNZ - In an evolutionary twist, a Dutch zoo is calling on the services of an Olympic gymnast to teach orangutans how to swing through the trees.
The zoo Ouwehands Dierenpark Rhenen, located in the centre of the country, said it had renovated its orangutan enclosure to allow the long-limbed, hairy, auburn-coloured primates to swing from tree to tree in an outdoor setting above the viewing public - but the animals appear to have lost the knack of it. Americans continue to express near-record-low confidence in newspapers and television news — with no more than 25% of Americans saying they have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in either. the word nigger is edited out, media matters has the unedited audio
That sucking sound you hear is radiohost Dr. Laura’s Schlessinger career being flushed down the toilet. She probably will stay on the radio, but won’t have any credibility left except with the racist masses.
Earlier this week Laura responded to an African-American caller who was offended that her white husband allowed racist conversation to pass without calling it out. Laura responded by telling the black woman that her examples of racist conversation were not racist, that she was too sensitive, and then proceeded to use the word nigger over and over again in a string.
Not content to stop there, she berated the caller until said caller hung up on her, then went off for another three minutes or so about how sensitive people are about race, and how “black speak” allows for use of the n-word with no problem.
CNN was the first cable news to pick up on a story of well known US radiohost Laura Schlessinger who used the word NIGGER eleven times on the air while responding to the call of a black woman. Since than the network has run four segments on it since. MSNBC reported on Schlessinger’s remarks twice already today. But how many segments has Fox News run? According to a ThinkProgress review of the network’s coverage, zero.
Why would Fox News ignored this story? Would it be because Schlessinger is a regular guest on the network. Just last year, Sean Hannity hosted the right wing radio host to promote her new book. [read on](more…)
“Half of the American people never read a newspaper. Half never vote for President. One hopes it is the same half.” - Gore Vidal
US cable network Fox News has the oldest audience of all networks. The average viewer last season of Fox News was 65 years old, according to Nielsen. Heck, it’s viewers are even older than viewers of Hallmark Channel, Military Channel and Golf Channel.
Perhaps the reason why viewers tend to leave Fox News on all day racking up hours of big viewing numbers is because they can’t actually change the channel?
In an article on the possibility of an Israeli military strike on Iran, Jeffrey Goldberg writes that, even President George Bush “balked at attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, and discouraged the Israelis from carrying out the attack on their own.”
And this is what Bush called Charles Krauthammer and William Kristol, commentators on Fox News, who can’t wait for the U.S. to start another war in the Middle East:
Bush would sometimes mock those aides and commentators who advocated an attack on Iran, even referring to the conservative columnists Charles Krauthammer and William Kristol as “the bomber boys,” according to two people I spoke with who overheard this.
