Nobelprice winner Paul Krugman, NYTimes - Here’s the situation: The U.S. economy has been crippled by a financial crisis. The president’s policies have limited the damage, but they were too cautious, and unemployment remains disastrously high. More action is clearly needed. Yet the public has soured on government activism, and seems poised to deal Democrats a severe defeat in the midterm elections.
The president in question is Franklin Delano Roosevelt; the year is 1938. Within a few years, of course, the Great Depression was over. But it’s both instructive and discouraging to look at the state of America circa 1938 — instructive because the nature of the recovery that followed refutes the arguments dominating today’s public debate, discouraging because it’s hard to see anything like the miracle of the 1940s happening again.

Maybe someone should point out to Glenn Beck’s guest that, even though it may feel good to condemn all atheists as “parasites” in a “moral society,” it is profoundly irresponsible to do s0. The withdrawal of 100,000 troops from Iraq since Obama’s inauguration is significant, and it’s a good thing that the President adhered to the withdrawal schedule. But 50,000 troops remaining is a huge number. “Uit het boek blijkt hoe weinig Amerikanen hebben geleerd van de geschiedenis. Hoe hun Messiaanse idee over democratie niet is veranderd in vijftig jaar. One finds identical excuses for each contemporary American disaster. De Democraten staan er uitzonderlijk slecht voor in de tussentijdse verkiezingen. Veel progressieven zijn kwaad op Barack Obama omdat hij steeds maar weer zijn best doet om het een paar gematigde Republikeinen naar de zin te maken, in plaats van te vechten voor de idealen van de vooruitstrevende mensen die op hem hebben gestemd.
Het is moeilijk te geloven dat de Amerikanen bij de verkiezingen in november de macht in de gekozen volksvertegenwoordiging zal teruggeven aan de Republikeinen. Toch is dat heel goed mogelijk, als je de onderstaande Gallup Poll moet geloven. En dan ook nog aan een Grand Old Party (GOP) in één vanhaar meest primitieve vormen. De partij die de VS in het laatste decennium vrijwel heeft verwoest door een mengsel van extreme corruptie, roekeloze, zinloze oorlogen en wetteloosheid. Maar het is historisch bekend dat het mengsel van economische onderdrukking en het opstoken van racistische en etnische haatdragendheid zeer potent is.

Crooks and Liars - Fox News host Glenn Beck promised there wouldn’t “be a dry eye in the house” after his big speech today at the Lincoln Memorial.

George W. Bush, who mostly kept a very low-profile since leaving the oval office, “is about to step into the public arena again” ahead of the release of his memoir. The publication of which is scheduled right after the November elections. Bush pushed back the publication, so that it wouldn’t impair the chances of the Republican Party in the midterm elections.

As polling-statistics blogger Nate Silver points out, the margin of error [as well as the poll’s status as the first to find majority approval] means we can’t assume that a majority of Americans support gay marriage, but it is “no longer safe to say that opposition to same-sex marriage is the majority position . . . . “

We have little information about what’s going on other than what’s provided in the Netherlands Nationaal Archief’s bibliographic record. It indicates that we’re looking at “Plastic face protection from snowstorms. Canada, Montreal, 1939.”
In Dutch, these things have a name: Plastic sneeuwstormbeschermer.

In the Sunday NYT Book Review, the always-excellent Johann Hari has a fascinating review of a new book by historian Richard Toye, Churchill’s Empire, which examines the two very different Winston Churchills. That dichotomy is epitomized by the very divergent treatment accorded the British Prime Minister by the current U.S. President and his predecessor. George Bush kept a large bust of Churchill in the Oval Office because — like so many right-wing, super-hawk, pseudo-tough guys — Bush fetishized Churchill for the warrior courage which Bush craved vicariously to possess but obviously lacked in himself and his own life. Haaretz - This is a little-known tale of Dutch farmers who trekked to Ukraine and Lithuania to be good Nazis but were spurned there as ‘white Jews’.
They came in their thousands from Holland to Eastern Europe to be good Nazis and help the Germans colonize more land during World War II. But according to the first major research into the Dutch settler movement, their German brethren despised them, dubbing them “white Jews.”
Approximately 5,000 farmers trekked from Holland to the Ukraine and Lithuania from 1942 to 1945. Their unique and little-researched story remained largely unknown even to Holocaust scholars until last month, when it was presented before dozens of Shoah researchers at the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem. Hoe dit gerecht smaakt, geen idee. Maar de naam is in ieder geval uitmuntend: 1881 Coffee Cafe’s Dutch Apple Walnut Loaf. Wat het betekent? We slaan er een slag naar. Een appeltaart, gevuld met walnoten, die in 1881 voor het eerst door Nederlandse emigranten in de Verenigde Staten is gebakken en bij de koffie wordt geserveerd.
We were smitten with this loaf even before it came out of the oven, the scents of cinnamon and apple perfuming the kitchen as it baked. Cooled, the wonderfully crumbly topping revealed a light and fluffy loaf, almost cake-like in texture. It’s only slightly sweet with a gentle tang from buttermilk, and with little chunks of apple and walnut suspended throughout. Paired with a good cup of coffee, it makes a perfect start to the day.

This is a very illuminating example of American politics. This Republican turned teabagger is basically campaigning against his own ideas. So he’s blaming the Democrats for policies he helped implement.
And of course, to be voted in as a teabagger, he has to leave out a past of seventeen years in American politics. Seventeen years!

We once set the standard for industrial might, for the advanced state of our physical infrastructure, and for the quality of our citizens’ lives. All are experiencing significant decline.
The latest dismal news on the leadership front comes from the College Board, which tells us that the U.S., once the world’s leader in the percentage of young people with college degrees, has fallen to 12th among 36 developed nations.
Welk land is niet in staat is om scholing, openbaar vervoer, begaanbare straten, bibliotheken en straatverlichting te betalen. U denkt natuurlijk landen als Zimbabwe, Niger of Nepal. Nee, we hebben het over de Verenigde Staten van Amerika? Zie een artikel in de New York Times waarin staat dat in Clayton County vanaf eind mei geen bus meer rijdt. En in Hawaii moeten de openbare scholen dicht op vrijdag om geld te besparen.
En zie dit artikel in de Wall Street Journal onder de kop: Terug naar het Stenen Tijdperk. Geasfalteerde wegen op he Amerikaanse platteland worden weer vervangen door gravel of zand. De staat Utah denkt erover de laatste klas van de middelbare school te laten vervallen of optional te maken. Het is allemaal te duur.De stad Camden in New Yersey is van plan de bibliotheek te sluiten eind dit jaar. Ook al niet meer te betalen. Ook al heeft voormalig president Bush de publicatie van zijn memoires uitgesteld tot een week na de tussentijdse verkiezingen in november, zijn Republikeinse vrienden zijn er absoluut niet blij mee. Speechwriter Matt Latimer vertelde dat rechts Amerika steeds bezorgder wordt over de impact van de memoires van de nog altijd uiterst onpopulaire president. Ze noemen de timing ‘gigantisch slecht’ en ‘zelfzuchtig en dom’.

Scientists now believe that there was no such animal as triceratops. Rather, the beloved and well-known dinosaur was the juvenile form of Torosaurus. Here’s a diagram of how the triceratops/torosaur skull might’ve morphed over time. Note, this isn’t established fact, just the latest theory from two paleontologists.
Luckily, triceratops was named first. So if this is confirmed by peer review, and consensus builds that they’re the same animal, then “torosaur” will get the axe. That’ll avoid the mess we got when Brontosaur was axed because 1) it was the same animal as Apatosaurus, and 2) Apatosaurus came first.
Senate Democrats abandoned efforts on Thursday to put together a comprehensive energy bill that would seek to curb greenhouse gas emissions, delivering a potentially fatal blow to a proposal the party has long touted and President Obama campaigned on.
No place in American politics for this kind of scientific reality:
Global temperatures in the first half of the year were the hottest since records began more than a century ago, according to two of the world’s leading climate research centres.
Scientists have also released what they described as the “best evidence yet” of rising long-term temperatures. The report is the first to collate 11 different indicators – from air and sea temperatures to melting ice – each one based on between three and seven data sets, dating back to between 1850 and the 1970s.
