‘Eline Vere” first appeared in 1889, and its success launched the career of Louis Couperus (1863-1923), now regarded as the greatest Dutch novelist of his time. That may sound like faint praise. It shouldn’t. With this “novel of The Hague,” Couperus produced one of those beautifully composed, old-style realist novels that present an entire society to us while simultaneously questioning its values. U weet natuurlijk dat een bekende Nederlander, een man die regelmatig opduikt op het internet en in de kranten, uit Goirle komt? Een man die nu al zeer geliefd is maar die, als het een beetje meezit, op het punt staat één van de geliefste mannen van Nederland te worden? Jullie weten natuurlijk allemaal op wie ik doel. Onze rots in de branding.

Maar hij is niet de enige bekende Nederlander uit Goirle. We gaan het vandaag hebben over die ander: Mario de Kort.
Gisteren trad hij op in eigen dorp, Belcanto, in Restaurant De Eetkamer. Aangezien de redactie van drasties er helaas niet bij kon zijn, zijn we afhankelijk van het volstrekt onpartijdige verslag van onze verslaggever ter plaatse: Mario de Kort uit Goirle.
Hoe het ging wilt u natuurlijk weten?
Mensen het was een donderend succes!
Er werd opgetreden op een terraspodium met het publiek er dicht om heen. Mario (bas) had de mooie Nancy Verschuuren (sopraan) en pianiste Agnes Huinen zelf uitgezocht want ”het ‘buehnenbild’ moet wel kloppen…” Zelfs zijn mentor en zangcoach de internationaal bekende Nederlandse tenorissimo Kees Taal zou komen. Gratis!
Mario: “In een mum van tijd was het restaurant volgeboekt en het weer was ons welgezind. We zongen, schitterend, publiek dol enthousiast. Nancy en ik hadden de performance volledig over controle. Pianiste Agnes was een veilige toeverlaat. Het programma was niet te zwaar, niet te lang, klassiek maar toch dichtbij voor velen.”

Kom op mensen, vandaag allemaal naar Goirle. Vanmiddag treedt daar van vijf tot zeven in Restaurant De Eetkamer de op drasties bekende ikjes, toikjes en moppen-schrijver Mario uit Goirle op in het gezelschap van twee, hoe kan het ook anders…, fraaie vrouwen. Te weten de Tilburgse sopraan Nancy Verschuuren (mario’s dochter Janneke: ‘die moet je horen die kan pas echt zingen’) en pianiste Agnes Huinen. Mario de Kort treedt heel toepasselijk op tijdens de WK-wedstrijd Ghana-Australië want met zijn sonore bas kunnen we hem rustig de Nederlandse Vuvuzela noemen.
Oftewel, u heeft geen routebeschrijving nodig. U hoort hem al op de A58, afslag Goirle.

De Nederlandse schrijver Gerbrand Bakker heeft de International Impac Dublin Award 2010 gewonnen voor zijn boek Boven is het stil (The Twin). Het is voor het eerst dat een Nederlandse auteur de grootste internationale prijs (100.000 euro) wint.
“It is ironic, I guess, but art is ambiguous,” curator Friso Lammertse said of the exhibition, which runs until August 12. “Of course, forgery is wrong. But Van Meegeren was a master of his craft, that of forgery.”

Ordinarily, the wrecking ball symbolises the ruthless flow of capital, but this time it only served to illustrate just how abruptly that flow had stopped. So what to make of Studio Job’s solid bronze Wrecking Ball Lamp – price: £16,000 [€ 20.000] – on show at the Carpenters Workshop gallery in Piccadilly? Controversial crucifix creates rift at Warr Acres church Warr Acres - Churchgoers are outraged over a crucifix in a Catholic church they say shows Jesus with exposed genitalia.
“This isn’t just a subjective drawing. This is a historical icon of the church,” said Reggie Jaime, husband of Janet Jaime, the iconographer commissioned by the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church to design the crucifix. “I can’t help what you see in things, or she sees in things, or anyone.”
The church’s pastor, Father Phillip Seeton, referred questions to the Oklahoma City Archdiocese. Monsignor Edward Weisenburger said he has no problems with the crucifix and referred specific questions back to Seeton. Critics of the crucifix take issue with what appears to be a large penis covering the abdominal area.
The crucifix is about 10 feet tall and hangs above the church’s altar. It is unclear how long it has been there. Molly Jenkins said she attended a funeral at the church recently and immediately noticed the crucifix. “I was appalled at the sexualization of Christ,” said Jenkins, who is not Catholic.

If the painting that won the nation’s most prestigious award for a landscape looks familiar, there’s good reason: the canvas is strikingly similar to the painting by a 17th-century Dutch master.
But the judging panel that awarded the $25,000 prize to Melbourne artist Sam Leach insists it is not embarrassed, despite rules that the Wynne Prize is for an Australian landscape.
Leach, 37, whose Proposal for Landscaped Cosmos so closely resembles a 1668 painting by Adam Pynacker, Boatmen Moored on a Lake Shore, said there was a long tradition of artists basing paintings on earlier works. read on>> (more…)

Kader Abdolah is the nom de plume of an Iranian man who quit his native land in 1985, first for Turkey and then the Netherlands, and has since written novels and other works in Dutch. His 2000 novel Cuneiform, published as My Father’s Notebook in 2005, was praised in this country. Zou ik het bijna vergeten. Ik was van de week nog even op het boekenbal.
Omdat ik in Frankrijk nog meer lezers van mijn blog heb dan in Nederland was ik uitgenodigd. Uitgenodigd samen met mijn buurman Alain, tevens beheerder van de lokale bibliotheek (238 boeken en 47 tijdschriften) en de burgemeester van ons dorp, uiteraard.
Het was me een drukte van belang toen wij met onze Renault 4 voor kwamen rijden. Verblind door het vele flitslicht wurmden wij ons naar binnen. Nog nooit zo veel schouderklopjes, knipogen, en hé hallo’s mogen ontvangen.
“Als je boek uit is, kom je dan in mijn programma?” vroeg Wim Brands. En die blonde jongen van van Erkel wilde een documentaire over me maken. Alain kwam met zijn agenda tussen beiden en schreef zo’n beetje alle dagen vol.
“Hier, je weet wel waarom”, zei Jan Siebelink en hij stopte een viooltje in het knoopsgat van mijn revers.
“Hé franse lullo, wanneer gaan we samen kreeft eten”, lalde Herman Koch, ik liet hem verder maar. Ik wist zeker dat ik zijn verkoopcijfers zou vermorzelen. (more…)
Uummannaq, Greenland - Dutch artist Ap Verheggen is teaming up with WWF to draw attention to extreme cases of climate change. Verheggen is attempting to give form its effects by building two giant sculptures, which are shaped to resemble dogsled riders, Reuters reported. The sculptures will be placed on top of a glacier in Umanak, and when the ice breaks off, people can monitor the sculptures’ journey via live camera until they eventually sink.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, nowhere are the effects of climate change more evident than in the Arctic, where its progression is twice as fast and twice as deep as the rest of the world. This year, no ice formed around the village of Umanak in Greenland, preventing the Inuit residents from using their dogsleds, which they depend on to get around, Reuters reported.
Recessions affect art fairs in different ways. The most obvious is when buyers stay away, especially if a fair has fallen from fashion or if entry tickets are too expensive. Another is when dealers abandon ship, curtailing the fairs they attend to two a year, say, instead of three. Or they suddenly offer deep discounts to ensure a sale. Slashing prices is a sure sign of lack of confidence.

The sale of the largest parts of the estate of the Dutch DSB bank, which went bankrupt in November last year, is not going well. There are no buyers for the bank’s football team, the stadium and its new museum in Opmeer. The curators also say that no serious offers have yet been made for the art collection of Dirk Scheringa, the bank’s owner.
It looks as if the museum in Opmeer will have to be pulled down. The curators are still trying to sell the art collection to a single buyer.
Scheringa’s herd of sheep has however been sold, including the hay and fences, which yielded 7,500 euro.

Het oordeel van de rechter: Nijntje-spotprenten mogen. Alleen twee vrijwel exacte kopieën van bestaande Nijntje-tekeningen zijn verboden. Nijntje mag van de rechter ‘zo stoned als een garnaal zijn’ en ze mag ook gaan ‘hakkuh’ want het wekt de lachlust op.

Fede Alvarez uit Uruquay maakte een filmpje over een robotaanval op Montevideo. Kosten: 250 euro. ‘Ataque de Panico!’ werd op YouTube al snel heel vaak bekeken. En ook kreeg hij na een paar dagen emails binnen van filmstudio’s, zogenaamd in Hollywood. Hahaha… De emails bleken echt. Sam Raimi (Spiderman-films) wil hem een echte film laten maken met een budget van 30 miljoen dollar.

Louis Andriessen - zeventig jaar geworden - zal de geschiedenis in gaan als de eerste persoon die ooit een spijkerbroek droeg in Nederland. In de jaren vijftig werd de broek door zijn broer meegenomen uit de States. Diverse musea in Nederland zijn met Andriessen in onderhandeling om de broek te mogen exposeren.

Dass er sich auf diese Weise mit etlichen seiner mehr als 30 Bücher neben vielen Freunden auch Feinde gemacht hat, weiß der Niederländer Maarten ‘t Hart nur zu gut. Karijn Kakabeeke, represented by The Empty Quarter Gallery from Dubai, is the sixth winner of this major international award. Born in 1974, the Dutch photographer is pursuing her continuing interest in social issues through her photojournalistic, essayistic images. In this context, she captures pictures that stand as magnificent icons of our time. The winning work “Khadija’s Dream” records an early moment in 2006 when Khadija first played with a football: an emotionally charged image of an Afghan woman who now belongs to the first female team in her country.
