UPDATE, september 3rd, 2010 at 9:44: Het is geen boorplatform maar een productieplatform. Dat is een stuk minder gevaarlijk. Alles is onder controle. Er zou ook geen olie lekken.
Er is weer een boorplatform in de Golf van Mexico geexplodeerd. Er zijn geen doden gevallen, wel lekt er olie. Aangezien het platform in ondiep water staat, zou een eventueel lek snel gedicht kunnen worden. Wat wel mooit uitkomt, is dat deze week net grootscheeps actie wordt gevoerd door Big Oil tegen het moratorium op boren naar olie in de Golf van Mexico.
An offshore oil platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, with some workers reported in the water.
The explosion aboard the platform, owned by Mariner Energy, occurred west of the site of the April offshore rig blast that caused the massive BP oil spill.

De derde was Samuel, een Amsterdammer.
Die offreerde rustig €75.000. Cohen vond dit een hoog bedrag en vroeg daarom naar de specificatie.
“Simpel,” zei Sam, “€25.000 voor jou, €25.000 voor mij, en dan laten we die Belg het werk doen.

The 150-year-old tree comforted the Jewish teen during her 25 months of hiding, and became an international cause celebre when it was nearly cut down in 2007.
Small branches from the tree quickly popped up on a Dutch auction website after it went down in high winds and whipping rains, narrowly missing the nearby Anne Frank House.

The research combined new deforestation and selective logging data with climate-change projections. It is the first study to consider these combined effects for all humid tropical forest ecosystems and can help conservationists pinpoint where their efforts will be most effective. Eindelijk, Ramirezi is terug van vakantie. En hij heeft het maar druk gehad. De professionele bioloog was namelijk betrokken bij de verkiezing van de 43ste Mary from Dungloe. Dat is een internationaal muziekfestival in Donegal, Ierland waar Ierse gemeenschappen vanuit de hele wereld (Londen, Madrid, Sydney, New York, Bayonne, Lutjebroek) zich verzamelen om te doen wat Ieren doen: zuipen and all of that. De gekozen Mary moet van alles kunnen: drinken, zingen, er appetijtelijk uitzien en het festivalvertegenwoordigen. Ramirezi was helemaal op Mary uit Edinburgh.
Ramirezi: Bij het ontwaken uit de zomerse blogwinterslaap gelijk maar een feestelijke bijdrage. Onze laatste stop in het fantastische Ierland was een huisje vlak bij Dungloe. Bij aankomst zoeken naar het huisje waar een briefje met ‘Ramirezi’ achter de ruit is geplakt, de sleutel zit al in de deur. De eigenaar verscheen enige tijd later en drukte ons direct op het hart om vooral naar het festival te gaan, een week lang muziek, veel Guinness en de verkiezing van de 43rd Mary from Dungloe. Een Nederlands meisje is in een berenkuil in een Duitse dierentuin gevallen. Haar vader klom daarop zijn drieharige dochter achterna en redde haar uit de klauwen van een Aziatische zwarte beer. De beer gaf het kind nog wel een mep in het gezicht. Ook de vader ontsnapte niet aan de klauwen van de beer. Hij ligt met verwondingen aan zijn been in het ziekenhuis.
Al met al een Min voor de moeder en een PlusMin voor de vader.
Schock im Tierpark Lünebach wo vor den Augen entsetzter Tierparkbesucher ein dreijähriges Mädchen in den Graben des Bärengeheges viel. Der Vater aus der Niederlanden sprang beherzt hinterher, konnte das Kind retten!
Der 34-jährige Holländer war mit Frau und Tochter im Zoo spazieren gegangen. Vor dem Bärengehege kletterte seine kleine Tochter plötzlich über den eine Meter hohe Zaun und fiel in den Wassergraben. Australians went to the streets protesting climate inaction by the government, according to climate campaigner Al Gore. The former Vice President called for demonstrations in the United States of America over the failure to enact policies that would curb global warming. “Across the world, when politicians fail to take action to solve the climate crisis, people are taking action,” said Gore. “It is my hope we see activism like this here in the United States.”
Thanks to the deadlocked United States Senate, the Deutsche Bank will not be looking to invest in alternative energy in the US but China and Europe. There policymakers are looking to the future, which the U.S. does not. The new Congressional state aid package is being funded, partly, by slashing $1.5 billion from renewable energy programs, which is like a hungry man buying fish by selling his fishing rod. This is how they do it in Portugal. Nearly 45 percent of the electricity in Portugal’s grid will come from renewable sources this year.
Alternative energy investment prospects have shriveled in the United States after the U.S. Senate was unable to break a deadlock over tackling global warming, a Deutsche Bank official said.
“You just throw your hands up and say … we’re going to take our money elsewhere,” said Kevin Parker in an interview with Reuters.
Parker, who is global head of the Frankfurt-based bank’s Deutsche Asset Management Division, oversees nearly $700 billion in funds that devote $6 billion to $7 billion to climate change products. [read on](more…)
Een Nederlandse Olympische slingeraar is door het Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen aangetrokken om de orang oetans opnieuw te leren slingeren. De beste slingeraar van Nederland is zonder twijfel Yuri van Gelder. We roepen de dierentuin dan ook op om te zorgen voor een strakke medische en psychologische begeleiding van de orang oetans om vergelijkbare problemen als met de ringturner te voorkomen.

The zoo Ouwehands Dierenpark Rhenen, located in the centre of the country, said it had renovated its orangutan enclosure to allow the long-limbed, hairy, auburn-coloured primates to swing from tree to tree in an outdoor setting above the viewing public - but the animals appear to have lost the knack of it. De eerste storting van BP is binnen. Er is drie miljard dollar op de rekening van een Claims Fund van de Verenigde Staten gestort. Uiteindelijk moet daar twintig miljard dollar op terecht komen dat zal worden uitgedeeld aan slachtoffers van de olievervuiling in de Golf vanMexico. Goed nieuws allemaal dus want het gat lijkt ook definitef gedicht. Over de schade die is aangericht verschillen de meningen. Het lijkt er op dat de schade aan het ecosysteem aanzienlijk is maar niet zo erg als eerder voor mogelijk gehouden.

Sarah Palin is using the ’grizzly mom who is defending her cubs’ as a symbol to show what she would do if she were elected president of the United States of America. You know: ‘family values’ and all of that… But what does it really mean to be a grizzly mom? And what about the grizzly dad?
Apparently Palin and her teabaggers want a society of lone mothers battling every man and each other for food for their competing offspring while protecting their kids from being eaten by their fathers.
The true life of a momma is a lonely one. There is no pappa bear in the picture. No cub knows his father. There are no mother grizzly social clubs. If they come across a hungry male, he takes one look and thinks, not “cute little beings of my species” but “LUNCH!” A lot of cubs are killed this way by rogue males, try as a mother might to protect them. A third to a half of cubs do not survive to maturity.
So the ideal development that this branch of the Tea Baggers want to bring about is a society of lone mothers battling every man and each other for food for their competing offspring and a return to the rate of child mortality that hasn’t been seen since the late nineteenth century. Perhaps a different species might be more appropriate for the “family values” ideal I keep hearing about. Might I suggest wattling cranes? Not only does daddy crane take his turn on the egg and bring food to the chick, but they mate for life.
Yesterday, government scientists released their official estimate of the total amount of oil that leaked from BP’s deepwater disaster: 4.9 million barrels, or 206 million gallons. Of that total, they estimated that about half had either been either contained, evaporated, or dissolved, that 24% had dispersed into tiny droplets in the ocean, and that 26% had either come ashore, been buried in sand, or remained in the Gulf as tar balls.
